Pulling hats???

I am having problems pulling hats out of breaks. I do what I can to filter my hats out but they just arent loud enough in the mix in the end. Sometimes it works but more often than not it doesnt. Can you guys help out with some advice? Thanks.

the best tip here is to do a highpass on exposed hats, however, what i usually opt to do is find a few clean hats and then pair those with a kick and a snare from a break.

You don't need to get all of your drum hits from loops, when you hear hats and they are clean, sample them and keep those saved. In my opinion, they are some of the hardest samples to find (nice ones, anyway).

a trick i use sometimes is to pair a tr-606 hat with a sampled kick and snare. I like my hats as clean as possible and my kicks and snares to be dirty.

Thanks for the advice lodger. Yeah when I am working on my own stuff I will usually use hats from a kit. The main reason I was asking was mainly for the battles. Its hard to get good hats out of the samples most of the time. So I guess when I hear good hats to pull I should start saving them. Thanks again. Any other tips?

Hey endo!...

Sp's are great, use the vinyl comp....or the regular compressor even better,to pull those hi hats out...if u use the hi pass filter,sample in Lofi to make em sound thicker too. Even the center canceler brings sum shine to those hi hats

70s rock is were I get most of my hi hats if u ever lookin or get one of the drum libraries on vinyl of course.

U could also lower volume of everything else?

i find that when i make a track, even if the hi hats are in mono, i'll record out, and if i record the beat back in IN MONO (i always go to tape then back to 404 pad to export) the entire high end of my track sounds muffled as shit (run it through ext source and turn stereo on and off to hear the difference) so i would suggest recording final beats in stereo, also, i have 2 samplers (404 and 303) so i get double effects, and its usually isolator on the 404 for track muting, and 303 filter with the freq sweep all the way up and the res around 10 o'clock, no drive, and it makes the high end of my tracks nice and bright, then i do vinyl sim on the way back in

I'm a big fan having similarly tuned air space / dead space around my chops, so I like when my snares kicks and hats can come from the same break. I usually will normalized them and sometimes layer another sound underneath - ratlle, woodblock etc. This is on the 505.

On the 404 I use more loops, so sometimes I'll just take a loop of hats from a sample library or ableton etc and put my own drums on top. Then reduce / remove parts of the orig hats for a swing / accent.

for sure wig, gives the hats a nice raw kinda lofi sound, a little crunchier, especially if they're nice full thick hats, i always mess around with it for every track, find the best setting, but i've found that i run it through the filter 99% of the time
