Grab "The art of Hip Hop Sampling". Its a good read, has some interviews and some interesting tips from old school DJ's.

Cosign. Also get "How to Rap" http://www.amazon.com/How-Rap-Art-Science-Hip-Hop/dp/1556528167/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1312126994&sr=8-1. It's a really dope hip hop book too.

If you like world history, check out Guns, Germs and Steel & Collapse by Jared Diamond. The Botany of Desire is a good one too, showing how marijuana, apples, tulips and potatoes use humans to "evolve".

I'm gonna have to up my reading game and check some of these out. Usually I opt for a good art mag bedside the bed to put me into dream mode... High Fructose is my favorite in that category.

Slaughterhouse Five is another great Kurt Vonnegut book.

Also Carlos Casteneda for the native american mysicism and spirit trippin... real magic.

Heavy Metal is a fun bedside read too, in the adult-content comic book category. Great art, and great variety of story and illustration style.

Just got a copy of the book the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins from my boss. Had never heard of it, but I can't put it down...it's a series too, so the addiction level is high lol There is suppose to be a film adaptation of it coming out in 2012

Have you read Galapagos? If so, what was your take on it? I started that one a couple years ago, but wasn't able to get into it.

The Hunger Games sounds intriguing. I'm gonna look into it.

With Borders going out of biz, I did some stocking up last week. Mostly on news stand stuff, cause all their mags were 40% off and books were mostly 10-20% at the time (might be better now). Anyways, I picked up this graphic novel called Siege that's turned out to be pretty dope. Great artwork, and a good mix of recognizable character (mostly avengers... and of course, the infamous Doom).

Plus one on the Dostoyevsky mentioned above - Crime & Punishment is awesome. Same w/ the McCarthy - The Road is super dark, but excellent.

If yr digging sci-fi, the Wells and Dick above is great, but don't overlook William Gibson...he's hit & miss, but Pattern Recognition really impressed me.

Anna Karenina is the greatest novel ive ever read. by the time it was over i felt more mature and that id experienced a lot more in my life. crazy shit.

George Orwell-Orwell's non fiction writings are as good as any of his novels..better in fact in my opinion.

J.P. Donleavey- Brilliant American novelist who lived for the majority of his life in Ireland.

All his books are excellent,read 'The Ginger Man' ,'The Singular Man' or 'A Fairytale Of New York' in particular..I guarantee that you will laugh until you cry.

Anything by Albert Camus- The greatest of all the existentialist author's for me personally.

i needed to get back into reading books more. appreciate this thread
i lived in central cali for awhile and really enjoyed reading steinbeck novels while traveling around that area. cannery row and tortilla flats are pretty fun fast reads. if u do read them u could to work up to east of eden which is like his opus i guess. i find steinbeck himself to be more interesting than hemingway.

another longtime favorite for me is italo calvino the baron in the trees. it had some unique surreal fairytale type feel to me. i would love to hear of a similar book.

my biggest suggestion would be confederacy of dunces.
my bro gave me this book. very funny and dif. the author died from suicide. then his mom later published the book i think. it has almost been made into movies wt john belushi' john candy and then chris farley. all of whom have died also. legendary cursed script i suppose.
