Windows 7 compatibility ?

I can see why people switch to Macs but XP is a great OS no matter what.

damn Ill, this stroy about win7 makes me mad! i got everything on win xp ,wich to me is a very cool os , i don't see the necessity to go for win 7, but every single damn man at the shops told me that installing win xp on win7 made machines was possible but difficult.

Roland really should upgrade the drivers for the 606. That machine can do alot but was released at the wrong time. You can use any program with it and sample anything from the internet as well as any tangent media, it was ahead of its time and Maschine wished it can do what the 606 did.

The biggest problem you will have in putting XP on a new built-in-2011 (or new-ish) machine is driver support. I work on PCs during the day, and the new Dell computers we received in do not even have XP as an option for drivers.

And if you use/need/want more than 4GB of system RAM, well, you need a 64-bit OS.

My home rig is custom built, and I could run XP on it (again, except for support for the 8GB of RAM I have in it). But what about when I upgrade the motherboard or something else, and there's no driver for XP?

Has anyone tried to contact Roland directly about Win7 64-bit support?

Mashine looks nice, but does not stand on it's own legs. You must be connected to a computer to use it (unlike the 606). Might as well just get an MPD24 and Reason...

i never liked it, but i saw some producer (also on this forum) using it, so i was -as a gear maniac- a little curious...recently i bought an mc-909 and sometimes i heard (on the net) comments like: "oh, maschine is better" etc; i don't even know how some people could compare maschine (a sampler) with mc-909 a (great) expander/sampling groovebox...

Windows7 Ultimate has XP mode so you can work with all your XP software and devices but its expensive.

To clear up Maschine, basically its FL on steroids with a fancy controller. Not my brand of psychoactive gear.

With VirtualPC you need a multicore cpu that supports virtualization (all modern cpus support that nowadays) and it will use at least 1g of your ram.
It's like having 2 pc's in one ,so if you plan running software between windows 7 and virtualXP it could be time consuming and I don't think it worths the trouble...
In the case of sp606 and win7 64bit I would prefer using an external soundcard with digital IO to sample directly from the PC.
I believe that in 64bit sp606 can still use the usb-midi interface,anyone could confirm that?
The only way is using win7 32bit and 3G ram with vista driver.... I will email Roland to see what are they planning to do(or not!)

Last time they told me that the SP606 receieved its final update and that no need to support discontinued hardware. I believe its due to the 606's USB 1.0 that there are no new drivers for today's tech.

I'm still bothering them about a new SP lately. Too bad Roland Clan is dead.

Below is a copy of an email I have now sent twice to Roland Australia. Despite being assured that any queries/issues would be responded to within 4 business hours, I am yet to receive a reply.

It is unacceptable that Roland should not have provided updated SP-606 driver support for systems running 64-bit Windows 7.

I own two brand new laptops with Windows 7 64-bit pre-loaded. It would seem that my only option to utilise the SP-606 USB soundcard function is to regress to a 32-bit system and employ the Vista 32-bit driver. To do so I shall need to pay for a premium Windows option in addition to purchases already made (both laptops were purchased at retail in the last two months).

I paid full retail (just less than $2000) for my SP-606 in 2006 and expect driver updates to extend beyond this 5 year time frame.

As a loyal and frequent customer to Roland/BOSS (and owner of 4 different models of sampler/workstations) I am exceptionally disappointed.

Please assure me that 64-bit driver support will be provided for the SP-606 model.

I have forwarded your comments to R&D in Japan. However, I have been told that the SP606 is not supported in 64-Bit Windows 7.

Quite a few of our customers have got around situations like this by keeping a separate laptop or desktop running older operating systems (XP, Vista etc.) which can be picked up fairly cheaply on Ebay.

I will inform you if there is any change in 64-bit Windows 7 support for the 606.

It is exceptionally obnoxious for a company such as this to ignore their customers in this manner. As previously stated I have spent thousands of dollars on products from the Roland/BOSS range and am entitled to something as basic as driver support.

I would urge all 606 owners to contact Roland and voice their dissatisfaction with the lack of driver support.

I'll try my hand once again on this. But your right, loyal customers should get what they ask for. I've been buying Roland products since 1996 and I expect support for discontinued products. A driver should be simple, its not like telling them to redo the entire OS of the 606, just a little message to the computer saying "hey, I'm an SP-606, recognize me and I'll rock your world".

The SP-606 was a flash in the pan though when it came out. The 505 had a good 5 year production run but the 606 had maybe 2 1/2 years and was discontinued for the 404.

I believe a new SP is coming though and that will be the 606 in disguise with better upgrades more polyphony and will shit on Maschine because its a controller and stand-alone tabletop sampler.

Like I said before Roland was ahead of their time with the 606 but it came out when computer-based production was at its infancy so not too many people caught on its potential like the MV.
