The psp has pretty standard internal computer components and an OS that's not concerned about being hacked, once the OS is hacked tons of code gets written for all kinds of things like NES ROMs and various system improvements. There's a program for a hacked psp that someone wrote that lets you sequence music on your psp, not to mention the fact that you can load any psp game or movie you download off the net on it and store them with an expanded cf card long before ipod touch.

It is what it is, they should have put in a better typing option but it's main focus was to be a portable gaming system so a keyboard would be superfluous.

You won't regret buying a DS, but it should be possible to revert your custom firmware to one of the older firmware updates and go from there.

I do have a PSP, but I do not have homebrew stuff running on it, so I can't help with the specifics, but it's definitely possible to "undo" older custom firmware. It won't update when the custom firmware is still on there, that's true.
