I just stumbled into it and found myself reading the whole thing. Its a nice read and has some helpful tips scattered around in there.

Once I got my mpc I found the importance of layering my single hits (you can layer 4 sounds on 1 pad). I also usually filter 2 different breaks. One with a hi pass and one with a low pass. These 3 drum layers really add some thickness to my beats. Before I didn't give my drums much thought other than boom and bap, but honestly its made a world of difference to achieving that next level sound. Good link spring :)

thanks for this!
having two layers of the same break is a really good technique, especially in the SP world. i think some of those raw-sounding Jaylib drums are made that way. the trick is to not only layer them but to experiment with different effects on each of the breaks, like distorting one or reverbing another and so on.

Ya, It was fun adding layers of drums in the MPC. Just look through your CF card and find a few drums that sound ok then put em together. I havent found a quick enough way to do this on the Mv so im still using the sp 808 to resample fast as hell and the compressor and dance eq are fucking nice.
Ive been Compressing and eqing the same drum sound a bunch of different ways, one with a little reverb, one with a little chorus of a phaser to get it sounding deep. Then when i have like 8 samples of the same drum all different, i start tapping 2 at a time till something sounds good, resample em together, then cut the tail. Seems like when a kick is tight it dumps more, than when you have a tail on it, like it has too much breathing room.

just to be clear on what yr saying metronome, do you mean layering two versions of the SAME break, eq'd differently, or do you mean 2 dif ones?

EDIT: just re-read yr post. missed the word "same".

solid read, btw. thx for posting it springwater.

Sick... I never layered two kicks on top of each other. I think it would be great to have a single kick and then add the other when the track picks up to give it more strength.

IN addition to filling different frequency bands with different kick samples, (eg lowpass 808 kick + highpass 909 kick),

you can also chop the attack/tail sections off different kicks - just make sure you cut it at the exact 0 (and make sure you cut both at the right 0 point - if you do one as it comes up and one as its going down, youll get a half-amplitude wave which will take the bass volume out of the kick at that point.

eg,
get a distorted crunchy kick, cut the impulse section off, then glue it onto the front of a cleaner smoother kick's tail. There were experiments done in the 20th century about mixing up the attack/tail portion of sounds, it is amazing how short an attack section completely changes the perception of sound.
