Record collections

Ahoy everyone! I have been noticing that a lot of hip hop producers all over the web always brag about how many records they own. I know some goodwill stores that have a thousand records but the majority are junk. Im not calling anyone out but just because you have tons of records does not mean anything. Quality is better than quantity. Just my two cents, and this is coming from a dj first and a producer second. Am I wrong? Any input is apreciated. Keep heads bangin fam!

I think I only have about 700 to 1,000 records. 30% Hip Hop from '88 to '95 and everything else is that old '60s shit to listen and sample. I have yet to sample the real good shit because it sounds dope as it is.

Nah, I'm a bit of a collector too- about 1000 CDs & 200 records. Only about 1/3 is ripe for sampling though. Jeff's point is a good one, owning music is different to making good music.

I try to buy dead labels, 60s 70s and anime only. plus instrument driven, like koto or drum solo shit. i don't have room for newer stuff.

I might have 500-800 records in my collection, which I started two years ago. I haven't taken the time to sort them yet. I have a bit of picture memory. So I go to thifts, goodwill, or record shops and come away with a bunch from that alone. Yeah quality over quantity is my thing as well. A bit of "blind" dollar bin grabs too.

I too am a hoarder of sort. Hell I got about 2000 movies.

About 6 months back i gave my local record shop about 4 crates of shitty records (new and old stuff) for 50 good ones of my choice. For a while there people were giving me their collections of records that I didn't want to touch. I can only handle so much 80s hair band music! Now ive got my collection down to about 4-5 crates of good stuff. I've given up on buying new records though.

+1, I think that it was Cut Chemist talking about Madlib in an interview who said something about it... they went to Brazil I believe... and they was diggin' a bunch of records so they couldn't find anything good... then moved to another crate... Madlib started diggin' on that bunch of records that Cut and others were diggin' previously and they told him, "you are not going to find anything good in there... it's junk" then Madlib said "really?..." and he pulled a bunch of record and he start finding some dope shit on them and the rest were like WTF?!

I only have something between 200-300 but every time that I pick a record I find something... you just need to hear the music...

a good example - the arena section.

I remember few times checking out the current battle sample and be like "nah, its too shitty for me to even fuck with that" and then baaaam, hearing what other guys came up with...

as far as my collection goes, its not big and I wouldnt dare to call it "quality stuff". I got this habit of trading the vinyls I already used, for some new shit from the pawn shop/garage sales too(where guys are sometimes eager to trade)

put in the shelves a few months back, super happy about that, got somewhere between 8-10 packed crates besides this, i think i'm somewhere around 2000 now, definitely got plenty of crap, but i got plenty of dope shit too, i understand that not everyone has the money to spend, i was lucky to have a super low cost of living for a long time, was in school livin on loans, and now i'm livin back at home, and although i definitely could have saved a ton of money by not buyin a bunch of the shit i have, i don't really regret it, and i can't help but go out and hit a spot up when i got some cash in my pocket, plus i always got somethin to pull out that i forgot about, sittin on more shit than i could ever know what to do with, i don't know how these big name dudes keep/kept their sounds straight, i really gotta find a better way of writing things down

i am not a big collector of vinyl. have 150 or 200 records in the "for sampling" shelf, i shift stuff in and out. mostly dollar store finds, almost none more than $10. i have a lot more in the "not for sampling" shelf, but that's different.

i think most of those guys that have shitloads of vinyl (cut chemist, steinski, shadow, koala, supreme, etc.) also seem to have photographic recall. like, you can pull out any random album and they can tell you the serial numbers, years, line ups and shit.

i am NOT one of those dudes. ha.

I lost track at 3,000 and that was just LPs. I probably have only about 60-100 45s, if that. I started collecting vinyl before DJing and producing so I'm a collector first. Plus I'd much rather buy an album on vinyl to CD although my CD collection is growing!!
