Laptop screen f°°°°d up...

hi guys
yesterday my old (8 years) sony vaio pgt815m has got his backlight -i suppose- completley "black": the pc is still living and i see windows xp icons, but they are almost like in a fog situation; it's difficult to see them clearly.
i done some research on the net; some says that the problems could be the 'invert unit';
i found that site wich seem to be clear in solving this problems.

Check the outputs, I'm sure there's a VGA out so you can hook up a monitor or flatscreen.

My Toshiba Satellite has this. I'm sure yours might too.

I've replaced the LCD inverter a few times on different laptops. The part is generally cheap and also easy to fix. Once you get the case off the laptop LCD it's all plug and play. Another thing you could do is plug the laptop into a monitor and use it as a desktop styled computer. I know you had made posts about getting a new laptop soon. Good luck!

Inverter or backlight, or like they already mentioned if you have a spare monitor just plug it in the VGA port, almost all the laptops have one (make sure to find which key combination you need to use to project the image to your spare monitor, most often Fn + F# )

Hey, i got another issue not so long ago. I have an acer travelmate 3210 laptop, went to a gig, did a sound check - all good. closed the laptop. while i was waiting for the time to play there was an apple computer put on top of my pc. when the time had come, I've opened my laptop and the screen was white and lit, showing nothing. the thing that helped me (and turned my laptop into a desktop pc) was plugging in an external monitor. don't really know what the problem was, but i don't think it's worth repairing, as the laptop (in it's condition and age) itself would cost less.

i just connected my laptop to an external screen now.
the first seconds while windows xp appears, the connection works, i see just the "win xp thing"; the connection breaks when my pc shows the pc inner desktop and then on the external screen is marked "no signal", so i see nothing more on it...

thanx locotesmjr , i combined Fn+F7 and i can see my pc descktop on the other external screen.
i've searched for about half an hour a damn sony manual on their site without success.
i just seen that on the F7 there is the icon of a screen so i tried this combination.

so, if it's this the situation, do you think that i have to substitute the backligkts or what? if it's too expensive maybe it's better just to buy a cheap vga screen and use the vaio as a "home pc"...

IDK how expensive can be those parts in your city, besides I'm not really sure if the problem are the inverters or the backlight, but what I'm really sure should be one of those... so I mean, could be inverter or backlight so... if techs in your are are a good choice for you then take it to a tech so they can tell you exactly what's the issue (they need to try with spare parts to see where is the problem) also you can try to find on Ebay somebody selling the same model of your laptop but broken (you just need to make sure the LCD screen it is in good condition) so you can buy it, take the good LCD and install it on your laptop...
Other option is just grab a used monitor and connect it to your laptop and use it as you said "home pc"

for now i just bought a very cheap monitor 'cause i have not enough time to see a technichien (plus, i will have vacations very soon), i think i will see him in september.

is it easy in your opinion to just take out the vaio screen by myself and leave the cheap one?

Sony always makes their stuff a little "hard" to get parts off but if you can take pics of what are you taking out and taking care of it then you are not going to have any problem putting everything back

you know what? this screen makes me mad!
now it works!
it has always some glitch at the very beginning, but after some seconds everything is like "normal"...
what this could be, damn?

It happened to me before with a HP laptop... like every electronic... they tend to fail sometimes before they finally die...
