How do you organize your music

Post by MechaLove »

I just bought a new desk (finally!) and some other things and now that I'm rearranging, I had to pull out all of my records (my fingers are sooo grimey right now) . They were starting to get mumble jumbled up as the last times I've been shopping I've kind of stuffed everything into the shelving unit without thought. They are a disaster now and I don't know where to start in terms of putting them away in some type of order.

I don't want to just do it by alphabet..I don't know why yet lol, I just feel I have too many to be looking through everything alphabetically. I've sorted them in kind of sub-piles (rap...classics/listening pleasure...things to sample that I've sticky noted...unheards...soundtracks...comedians....sound effects...cartoons...unwanted etc) but it still seems kind of mucky to me.

How do you guys sort your things? Maybe I might get some ideas.

I have mine in hip hop 12" then hip hop albums, 80's to today rock, pre 80's rock, funk and soul together, electronic, spoken word and cartoon / sample able stuff, all of the 45's are separated by things I play and things I want to sample. I do this mostly because I dj and if they were not in some kind of order my head would explode.

lol someone told me I should do it by color. I rolled my eyes so hard. It would be pretty, but so dysfunctional. I woke up this morning and opened up my cabinet and it looks so nice. I can't wait to put in work.

i do the same as above, divided by loose categories. i use hacked up bits of file folders (or something) to divide em too, so i can find shiz faster when recording.

i also keep a big 'misc' file for stuff i haven't sorted yet, or just bought and haven't gone thru.

by colour would be wicked.

I think they meant the spine, but that's even more confusing because more often than not, they are either black or supposed to be white lol.

I'm thinking about getting some colorful file folders from the dollar store and hooking it up like that too.

Wax, how do you do yours lol? I'm curious to how the inspecktor gets down.

i sort everything by genre. jazz, soul/funk, rock/folk/etc, hip-hop/vocal, misc. (electronic, world, random sounds), then finally breaks. it works pretty well and allows me to loosely pin point specific records. i'd like to then group by artists within each genre, one day..

33 Rpm -> Chronological but not sort it by date of release but date of purchase. Great to remember wich style i was in depending the years, and how i came to a record , a style of music, an artist...
A great way to remember where i bought each record and why (mood , influence, by luck, advice)

45 Rpm -> Don't even bother to classify. Don't mean anything to me

I organize by *general* genre and then by artist, but sometimes I just clump stuff records together when they remind me of eachother and I seem to remember where those are the most. haha

I just pile everything up in a corner & take a blindfolded lucky dip for samples.
