Okay, so I'm using a 303 and I want to track something out to my VS880ex with the panning MFX on it. I have a RCA to 1/4" TRS cable running from the outs of my SP to the 1/4" input jacks on my VS. For some reason, when I record the piece with panning, I only hear it in one channel. If I plug my headphones into the SP and hit the pad, it's perfect but if I put my headphones into the VS, I only hear half of it...more like Tremolo lol.

Do you guys have any idea what I'm doing wrong? I looked in the manual for the VS and it has some thing for stereo in and I pressed what it told me to press and it still didn't help. The description didn't sound like what I wanted it to do anyway. it said;

You can assign input signals from the INPUT jacks or DIGITAL IN connector to the MIX bus or RECORDING bus, without having them pass through the input mixer. You can also monitor these signals without having them pass through the input mixer or output mixer. This is referred to as Stereo In. This can be convenient when, for example, the same input source features sounds with effects and sounds without effects recorded on separate tracks.

Roland-ese as they say lol.

Is it my cables? To my understanding the 1/4" is capable of reflecting stereo, so I don't know.

Thanks

Or am I supposed to some how record it into two tracks and play them simultaneously? That sounds like it would make sense but like...I'm recording it with the effect on it live (I didn't resample) and I don't think I would be able to get the exact same result on both tracks. Plus, it seems like it's only registering one channel anyway.

Did you always make beats using just your headphones? I'm asking because maybe your outputs are fucked up and that's the reason why you only can hear 1 channel... but if you use your SP connected to a pair of monitors and everything its okay then I don't have a clue what could be wrong... :?:

Well, I just tried monitoring the 303 through my computer and it reflects the panning accurately, so I guess the outs are working fine.

OK, but are you connecting your PC to your RCA stereo outputs or to your headphone output? you should do it to your RCA, we already know your headphones output it is working properly... this issue with the 303 is very common, outs and ins always do this thing... I fixed mines in my 505 just soldering the cracked contacts

Sorry if I was unclear, I understood you before lol. I connected the PC to the RCA outputs of the SP. I used a 3.5mm to RCA cable.

Just a thought... if your 303 is playing samples in stereo w/efx (you just proved that using your headphones and hooking your PC to your SP) so maybe it is your mixer which is not taking stereo and it's config as mono input or you are using a RCA stereo to 1/4" mono??? can you post a pick of the cable connectors?

Just in case this is how a mono tip looks:

and this is the stereo:

Yeah it has the sleeve thing so I guess it is stereo. Thanks so much for trying to help me lol. I hope we can figure it out. I'm going to message Springwater and Johnny Canuck since they have VSs too. I'm going to message the guy who sold it to me as well. He should know.

I just don't understand what is so complicated. Something has to be broken for it to be acting so dumb, but I'm not sure. I tried it in different input jacks too and it's the same ish. Hopefully it's just some thing I have to switch off in one of the menus.

Your welcome, I want to think that it is something about the input in your VS, maybe it is config as mono and you need to change that value to stereo, should be something simple... you know what? did you tried RCA stereo to 2 1/4" mono? maybe you need to records every channel to a different channel? (maybe it only takes mono signals...) :?

Ho ho, well, someone just informed me on another forum that the input jacks are mono so I'm supposed to split it into 2 tracks. Which isn't what I wanted to hear lol. Is there such thing as a RCA to 2x 1/4" plug because I won't be able to tape the exact same thing twice. I'm playing the panning samples in live throughout the song and I don't want to have to lock them in a certain way by resampling it. Could I use like a male dual RCA to male dual RCA cable and then put a female RCA to 1/4" mono adapter on the end of one side?

ETA, just saw your post...yeah lol I'm going to look for those cables. I don't see them at my usual cable spot, but I will keep looking. I'm not yet sure about ordering either because we have a postal strike going on and I might not see them for a long time.

LOL I knew it! hehehe...

Well... then you need to buy 2 of this and hook it up with your regular RCA cables:

Also (and better IMO) you can buy this one:

So you have RCA Left to 1/4" mono and RCA right to 1/4" mono, then hook the 1/4" plugs to separate channels in your VS

I found them at a DJ store up the street from me for now. The shortest one I could find is like 6 feet long ! Everything else that I have is like 3 ft max lol. I hope it doesn't pick up a lot of noise. I'll use it until I can find a shorter one. Now I just have to find someone to go in there for me. I had a bad experience and I really don't ever want to go back in there again .

you probably gotta pan the two tracks hard left and hard right too, respective to its rca out of course........also, if you got two rca to 1/4" cables then you can just use one rca from each of them to the two 1/4" ins, and just be sure to keep the other rca tip from touchin anything, but it sounds like you grabbed the cable you needed
