are they quality batteries some cheap batteries that are really light dont have enough power to power things, the good ones are more heavy and a bit more expensive,

are the contacts clean, no battery acid on them ? has it been used with batteries before ?

they're rayovacs--decent batteries. i tried them on another device and they are working. there was a little acid on one of the contacts, but i cleaned that off. the unit has worked with batteries many times before. i'll take another look at the acid, but it looks pretty clean. any other ideas?

there is a couple wires behindthe barrety case that connect to the contacts, they are flimsy and connected with a little dab of solder, you can pretty much see them from looking in the back, if they are connected properly or you could open it up and make shure . thats all i got

happened to me too when i put fresh rechargable batteries and sometime when i put them on after they're fully charged. it didnt happen back when i had non rechargables on it tho. my guess is its the voltage of the battery itself cause when i had the non-rechargables i noticed it had 1.5 volts but my new rechargables have only 1.2 volts. it works fine now tho if i mix them with different brand rechargables. my other guess is that it probably has to do with their mAh.

Maybe the battery contacts can go bad, especially if there's been a battery leak.
Another possibility is the external power socket - it has a switch built in that disconnects the battery when the plug's in, so that switch could be faulty.

There are different types of rechargeable batteries and some of them don't work on the 404. Here's a quote from older thread (info provided by unCLONED)

Quote:
I had exactly the same problem when I got my SP404 and bought a pack of rechargable AA batteries. But what I found out is that the 404 only accepts "L6" and "LR6" batteries. I had bought "LH6". It's mentioned in very small letters in the bottom!

i'm actually having the same problem with my 404 :? have you found out what the problem was since then? :p Same battery brand and all. I wonder if changing battery brands would help? Actually don't have the money to spend on expensive batteries atm though lol

PROBLEM SOLVED!

apparently, the contacts had bent over time. i brought it to ken at audio nexus in milford, CT and he was a great help. he tested it with other batteries, and eventually found that the batteries i had in were slightly smaller, so they weren't hitting the contacts good enough.
the ones i was using were rayovacs. so apparently, certain batteries are a bit shorter and won't work if the contacts have been bent over time
