Re: How long have you been making beats?
i've been singing and playing guitar & drums in bands / making indie rock for....jeez. about 20 years in all honesty. only been making beats for about 4 years tho. almost all self-taught. that's why i'm still terrible after all this time
i gotta say, sp-forum has totally helped me making beats & playing around w/ the artform. support, encouragement, legit tips, ridiculous lols and inspiration.

Re: How long have you been making beats?
Made my first beat in 2001 (on computer using mp3 audio mix) , I named it "Dynamic" lol. Took some open drums off this AZ song and threw on this dope piano loop mp3 I had on my computer. I was blown away when I found out that I could do that and I haven't stopped since
Picked up an SP-606 in 2009 and re-learned how to make beats using an actual sampler with pads and effects -> with the help of the sp-forums

I had a different scenario, I only knew them as beat machines, so when I went to the shop and asked for one, the dude showed me a mixer with sound effects. I knew that wasn't it so he showed me more mixers and drum machines, and I was like "nah, I want that device where I can take a record and take clips off of it to make music with it" Dude eyes lit up and he said "Oh, I see, you wanna make beats! What you want is a sampler." He showed me 3 types but they all were in the thousands$$. I left feeling down because I thought they would at least be a hundred bucks, but nope.
When Roland dropped the MS-1, that was the answer to my prayer. I think that was the first budget sampler that had all the pro features.
