How do you use it? I can't seem to get the right sound out of it.

Any tips on the subject 'making your shit sound lo-fi'?

a lot of sounds dont sound good when the lofi fx are applied. when i use lofi for drums and shit I try to go light on that effect i go crazy with the controls when i wanna filter for a bass line. just gotta experment with the controls and see what they do.

a little off topic, i punched the word lo fi into a search engine a few days ago and found it on wikipedia.
Lo-fi is an aesthetic in music production which uses lo-fi recording practices. Its use is usually due to the artist's financial limitations. Many lo-fi artists use inexpensive cassette tape recorders for their music. The term was coined by WFMU DJ William Berger who dedicated a half hour segment of his program to home recorded music throughout the late 80's under the name Lo-fi.

Anyone whoever heared that station knows how bugged out it is. I couldnt believe they are the ones that came up with that shit.

I sample in with the lofi button on and use the vinyl sim compressor as I sample. I like results I get from that.

try that and you may want to add a little filtering after that. On some samples the hi end artifacts can get annoying.

word, as sweet as the Lo-Fi record setting is, it does give you some junk up the top end. i tend to resample with the EQ effect on, ctrl 3 at 9 o'clock.

Ha, I was digging today and found one of your samples that you used for your beat tape Frantic. I found it in my Bob James Discography and wanted to use it but I was sampling in Acid Pro and couldn't loop it the way I wanted so I left it, plus you used it so nicely.

word. on my digital track recorder sometimes I layer a hi pass copy with a lofi(some treble EQed out). never thought to do that within the 404.

Very true, but I'm also pretty sure that DJ wasn't the first to coin the term 'lo-fi'... The underground indie scenes of various kinds of music have used such a term for ages, long before that DJ had his programs on the air. The earliest must have been somewhere in the 50s, perhaps 60s....

Still.. technically, it's different when people use 'lo-fi' equipment especially to get a lo-fi sound or when it's simply 'the best at there disposal'.

I love that station. I can't believe there aren't a million more free form radio stations out there. I think I'll listen to it at work today.
