you could do the same thing with a midi keyboard. He imposes "I am doing cool live shit" but in fact it is just prearranged lame ass clipping triggering. probably has the ableton 1bar safety net triggering enabled too.

Speaking as both a bassist and beatmaker, I'm pretty turned off by attempts to shoehorn electronic music into a jazz setting. Jazz is jazz, sampling is sampling. Both are valid. Producers shouldn't have to contextualize their shit like this...

exactly - plus: obviously he is just trying to rub of some of the "jazz is so intellectual and cool" all over his body! I mean he is not even manipulating the samples in any way, just layering them on top of eachother so at the end there is this pseudo-jazz-mud.

Give the guy a break,lol..I think it's pretty dope to see an old white guy like this getting down with some sampling- a lot of people his age dismiss sampling as music and art altogether-even a lot of artists that have become relevent again and made a whole lot of money due to sampling . Reminded me of how I've always wondered what john lennon woulda done with a modern sampler-george martin introduced him to looping with tape and he was really into it. Anyway,nothing too amazing,and that is one bulky ass ugly looking fuck of a machine,lol-but put it in perspective-the man looks like he's probably in his 60's.

Thanks aD those are exactly my thoughts on these vids. It's dope to see him making his own controller, rockin ableton (with his custom colors) diggin for some samples/loops and even dabbling with a few FX. He's doin his thang.... and ya I hope to be still doin my thang at 60! Didn't anybody teach you guys to respect your elders??

second vid. isn't half as bad as the first one imo, that is acutally a nice track!
and age is no factor in music, imo. there are many older cats with open ears for the new stuff - they always had open ears and always will. I think it is a mindset not a matter of age.

Back in the day my then 60 year old guitar teacher also had some students really being into limp bizkit -btw. this teacher was a classicaly trained violinist, who got into jazz guitar later in his life - at one time he played some songs from "chocolate starfish" to me and was all "ooh listen to this and that... thats soo cool how is he doing that" - he was really getting into it. minutes later he left for his jazz trio gig.

okay i have a problem with this.. how would this be better if the guy played this on a midi keyboard. this guy is playing an original midi controller (that he personally designed) and mixing it together better than he would be able to on an axiom. it may be a little bulky but why does it have to be sleak, thin, made of plastic and painted black?
hes doing what most of use do in the first place, playing loops. but he took it one step further and wanted his own machine that he could sit and play so the audience could watch what he is doing while hes pressing buttons and turning nobs. its not like hes putting a strap on it and dancing around making a fool of himself.
