scratching

i just got 2 gemini XL-500's and a gemini pmx-18 mixer....
im super new i have a boix of records and stuff any tips?
plus what can i exactly do with them please help...

sample, beat juggleling, scratching and all the other stuff DJs do.

Look at DJ videos at youtube.

And for scratching...

Get Q-Berts first scratching DVD and scratch everyday to get better.

XL500s are really decent beginner decks.. I used to have em !

qberts vids are really good. but yes... practice practice practice ! find places where there are scratch nerds and ask them questions

imo,
rythm is everything. kinda like a bassist. it can be one note, but it has to be on rythm. complex isn't always better. most times, something simple done repetetively with good rythm sounds way better.

oh yeah, "scratch everyday".. couldn't have been said better.

what he said. rhythm and practice and you can sound decent on anything.

I'll say this: Most people starting out focus way too much on the fader. What the record hand does is far more important than what the fader hand does. Clicking the fader without a moving a record is just silence (unless you've got a dirty fader

). It's like with the guitar, people focus way too much on the fret hand, when it's the picking hand that's actually making things happen (well for the most part, there's all kinds of remote techniques that don't involve picking, but that's pretty advanced stuff). As was said earlier in this thread, rhythm is important.

man my piece of shit Numark DM1050 DJ mixer has a grungy fader...i've had to resort to gating the signal with the volume fader (i only got one deck for scratching, so no need to blend signals for juggling or anything).

Yeah, I really wish I had a mixer and some good tables. I love sampling but just playing with records instantly and not having to step edit all the time is way better. Plus I still need a Numark pt-01 so I can make my digs more efficient and fruitful.
