to call out a beat maker from jacking drums from another producer? not just one offs, but the actual pattern. clicked a random guy on soundcloud and the first beat i checked was this:

i say yea

you can call out that he/she is unoriginal, and at worst a biter

it's not really diff in principle from stealing a melody in guitar music...as producers the drum rhythms we lace on tracks is our complete creation and imprint...but the water gets murky b/c producers recycle drum loops/breaks...either way it's mad unoriginal and weak

i say its fair game depending on how its used. for this one, because its dilla, it can come off as an homage

I agree with Teewok.... I play guitar so sometimes when I write a certain riff it may sound very similar to another artist that has influenced me. It's a little borderline though, because it seems like he jacked the whole drums entirely.. I think he layered another snare over the top, but it is mos def. the same drums.

And in the same token, if he made great use of it and it's not a rip off from the actually original track, I can't dog it too hard.

Also not much different from a million hip hop producers sampling james brown snare :?

Good ear IIIII.

I think that sh*t is weak... oh so weak. Programming drums is the first thing you learn in making beats... if there's not a clear disclaimer that it's supposed to be an homage, then dude is just a biter.

thx LURKIN

I dint know it was a drum break, guess that kinda settles it....not really biting

unoriginal maybe but producers use the same breaks/loops all the time

here I am the idiot that plays every drum track from one shots, never used a loop once

i dont think it matters, in this case or any case, i'm usually ultra critical about everything but it doesnt matter and the beats sound completly different, i never thought of sampling drums from rap songs but my homie did a couple times and it sounded crazy dope, but the drums this dude jacked isnt very dope

You really gotta judge by the context and how it was done. In this case, the beat sucked. Let him basque in the glory of 10-15 e-compliments while he fools himself into believing he knows how to craft a hot beat. In the meantime, the rest of us can research how Dilla was able to take a break and engineer it to knock that hard.

yepp, same here. unless i want to make something with sounds of original breaks to point them out.
and about biting - when i listen to some influencing artists, i try to understand how they made the drums or patterns (try reverse engineering cupp cave or herrmutt lobby), so naturally this leaves some sort of signature on the beats. i make the stuff from learning what i like and hopefully my own style will develop from that someday =]
