Is anyone using a cassette recorder with pitch control/speed change to get the tape sound? I've been looking into buying a portable one and was hoping someone could point me towards a decent one to purchase, used.

any tips would be greatly appreciated.

yeah always bring a tape to try too. a lot of old ones have worn out motors or broken belts that might be worth fixing but usually not. theres usually tapes at the stores too

so i found a Marantz pmd 101u for 30 bucks in good condition
had to order a power adapter and eventually get some d batteries, but i thought this was a steal for what they normally go for.

I still want to get a dual deck and mix it like the old days just for fun!

I've got the Sony 200DV. You can record in double time, so you can playback in half time or also record in normal and play back double time. There is also a little dial to adjust the pitch with a pretty good variance. Its also got an internal mic/jack for an external mic.

Take a look at the motor. Usually you can trim the speed with a small screwdriver.

you guys sample thru cassettes a lot? i've always thought about it. while i love the sound (grew up on it!) it seems like a lot of work to cue up & dig for the sounds. yes / no?

CERTAINLY NOT AS STRAIGHTFORWARD AS VINYL SAMPLING, BUT SOUND LIKE A PROSTATE MASSAGE FROM A WARM-FINGERED HOT NURSE.

PLUS DEM CASSETTES BE FLY AS FUCC.

i do some sampling from originals but i mainly use blank cassettes to record something on to and then resample the cassette recording into the 404. especially with pitch and speed options to adjust the recordings as needed before bouncing into the 404. but the main focus is the sound i want to hear... the saturation, slight hiss, semi compressed. and makes me feel like im 10 years old again getting into music for the first time.
