Is the Sp-555 worth it?

Being a sampler fiend, I've been keeping my eyes on it for a bit. As of late, the sp 606 has been my go to along with the sp 404, of course.I've been looking at them on ebay but people want between $400-$700 USD which seems WAY too much. Hell you can get an MV for that much! I was just interested to hear the opinions of those people currently using and those who have used it. Thanks, guys!

I love mine. I was lucky to pay $200 at a pawn shop for it. I think a fair price would be $350-$400 if you look around.

Its like a 404, but the fact you can use it as a computer soundcard is awesome. Going back and forth between the two is seamless and gets rid of a lot of hassle (more hassle = more creativity interruption). While resampling a pad, you can play instruments through your computer and it will record with the resampled pad (say you are resampling drums, you can play a bassline in your daw and it will record both). The loop capture is handy as well. The D-Beam is a cool idea, but my favorite thing is using it as an impromtu filter, so its great to be able to use any MFX and a filter at the same time. I love the 404 (and still wont get rid of it), but this machine has everything I like about the 404 (sans portability) with a lot of extra (worth it) benefits.

yeah two fx at once is a nice feature. why not get an mv tho? i've been curious about those

But do you use any other SP? All the shortcuts are the same, pretty much. Except, there is a "copy" pad function on the 555.

MV has three fx at once but limited to one mfx. Yeah, pisses me off too.

Really? To me it flows the same as any SP, maybe because I use it like an SP, but it aint slow. Maybe you got tons of sounds and songs in there slowing up load times. I like to erase everything when a song has been ripped, I transfer it all to CD and lock it away. Its good to have a clean MV for every song or project.

at admbmb, I rock a 303 and a 404 and have had them for years. Got the mv over a year ago. It just is not for me, it is just sitting in the corner collecting dust.

i started on my 404. for which i will always love...

but my 555 is the real horse. its all i use anymore.

I too can speak on the dopeness of the 555... it was my first SP, and has a grip of unique functionality/benefits. Loop capture is dope, & effect memory is also a plus... and the USB is a nice convenience.

But then again, each of the SP's has it's own selling points, which I'm sure you know since you have a 404 & 606. One of the few that I've never owned is the 606... the 505 is dope though, and I think similar to the 606. I also have the problem of fiend'ing for more SP's. I'm up to a 404, 505, 555 and 808 combo. The 404 is only used as an effect box for my drum machine in the stationary setup though. I think if you add a 555 it will replace your 404 in the studio... which will ultimately free up the 404 for portable op's.

Yo Jeff, have you thought about selling your MV? or trading for a different SP model?

505 to 555 is actually a pretty nice combo. I wouldn't get rid of a 505... but that's just me. Sometimes one thing has to go to free up space in the studio and funds, I understand... but those 2 complement each other nicely with minimal overlap in features. Effects are better (as in grimier) on the 505... plus sequencing is way better.
