Wouldn't it be cool if there was a "Mini SP"?

Yo! been a minute since I last surfaced 'round here, but this topic is hella fitting. Basically, over the last 8 months... I've been coding up a lofi sampler for the ipad. Hands down, inspiration comes from all the lofi dirt boxes, but this thing will be instantly familiar to sp fam.

Anyway, getting [back] into coding actually started here with the "hacking the 404sx" thread. At that time last year I kinda got massively sidetracked after growing kinda annoyed with the way the SX works versus the 202/303. Apple then dropped the ipad, and a thought creeped in all sideways... maybe, maybe, maybe, I can actually write this shit. So I snagged the SDK and started trying to figure out how all this crap works.

Now here I am 8 months later (grinding on this thing daily), finally with a real sampler in hand. Still got quite a bit of work to do, but it def is nearing completion which is why I'm finally speaking on it. This is no beatmaker, nanostudio, etc. It's different in that I'm not really interested in that type of workflow. Some highlights tho, it has a completely modular effects rack so you can chain shit pretty much however you like, built in multi track as opposed to a sequencer, real time resampling, pitch control, 15 effects (so far), reverse that works like the 303/202, channel groups for samples, waveforms on pads, 6 parameter knobs, and other shit. No menus to dig thru, no typing, and crap like that. As things get closer, I'll need some beta testers most definitely... so any sp fam who have ipads, lemmie know.

Anyway, here's a pic...

(BTW, sorry I never finished the SX tool for those that were interested. Good thing is, it looks like someone else took the reigns with something even better. Figuring out this thing really consumed all my time.)

looks dope man, good work. too bad most of us don't have an ipad :(
edit- thats just speculative... at least i dont lol
so is that the wave forms imaged to the pads?? thats dope

I started selling shit to fund an ipad. lol. The prices for the 1st gen's are coming down now that the 2nd gen is out. Still gotta have the camera connection kit + something like an iMic in order to sample into it tho. The waveforms are on the pads, you actually edit the in/out on the pads too (hard to explain, but a demo would make it clear). Loop, reverse, pitch, and gain are independent to each pad, and adjustable per pad (banks A-H, for 96 samples total). Like you can pitch a sample with a circular motion on a pad, same for gain. As soon as I get the multitrack part completed, I'll start some demos.

wow looks awesome. will the resampling be time constrained to tempo, say bounce down 2/4/8 bars at 120bpm?

The idea of bars/bpm kinda goes out the window. You record like you would into a multitrack, playing at whatever tempo you like. Tho not everyone's workflow, pretty confident the folks who make stuff solely by resampling would get it. I personally never use the sequencer in the SPs, preferring to just record/resample... kinda how it's described at the top of this thread. Anyway, in terms of resampling, this has a more powerful resampling engine. For instance, you can monitor all the tracks but only record/resample a selected track output or a particular pad including it's fx chain. Moreover, you can record/resample from any point in an FX chain. This alone makes it really easy to layer up tracks... it's just a different flow all together, but at the same time familiar.

Whoa...did I read this right? Are you saying you can do resampling mode, but still have the ability to isolate sounds afterwords?

Basically, you can group samples into 4 different buses that all get mixed to the headphone out. But these buses can have whatever fx chain you want. You can resample from any bus (or comibation of buses), and from any point in the fx chain. So if you have one sample in particular you want to resample with an fx, but you want to play the rest at the same time with different fx, you can do that. Just put the sample you want to record on bus #1 (for example), and put the rest on #2, #3 or #4. Then you can hear everything, but only record that one. It's hard to explain but once you see it it'll make sense. Basically you are just monitoring while you are only recording one specific channel. But it's totally up to you how to do it, because the routing is modular (think the backside of Reason, or something like Audiomulch, EnergyXT, even MaxMSP sorta on the software side). You are in control of where the audio routes, and where you record from.

PM modulR and he will send you some instructions on how to obtain it. I tested it about a year ago and it was working good. He was planning on doing a complete code rewrite to give it more flexibility and performance. It's definitely a homage to the SP samplers!

i shot you back a pm. As formal mentioned, it's in rewrite mode. It looks pretty much the same, but the structure internally is completely new. This should make it a lot easier to debug, and expand down the line. The beta will resume i'm hoping in the next 2 months, and there are always spots open for more testers... def!

Once the beta continues, let me know. I've got the iPad 1 & 2. :)
