Bpm of FX / Pattern Resample ?

Post by wax inspektor »

Hey guys, is it possible to resample a pattern?

Why does the sp404 always apply the FX / Delay to the bpm of the sample ? Hope ya understand... For example: I want to resample a sound with 98bpm with a delay but the pattern is played at 85bpm. How can I resample so that delay fits the pattern? I know that it's played correctly while playback, but i want to resample that shit!!! Same deal with the slicer... Is there any way (through the backdoor) ???

to resample the delay i adjust the quantize. I mess with it till it sounds right. Not sure if its accurate but it has worked for me in the past.

only resample works on samples. you should use the flying lotus technique and copy patterns.

can you adjust delay with quantize? juxt please explain further.[/u]

I think you can adjust quantize of the delay by selecting delay and using control one.

maby I didnt undersand the question. I thought he was asking how to get delay to be the same while a sequence is going and without a sequence going.

It's simple just make the sample you want to put on delay to be at the same tempo of the drumloop(which it should probably already be at for them to beatmatch). Set the delay to 1/4 or 1/8 notes with mfx cntrl knob 1 so that when you play your sample and the pattern isn't running it will always be at the same tempo and delaying at 1/4 or 1/8 note intervals so when you want to put the drum pattern back in you just hit the pattern button on the first down beat of the delayed sound.

^^^ That will work.

Also, the 404 applies the effect rhythm based on the highest BPM value when applied to multiple pads. So you want to run a pattern at 92 BPM, and let's say your drum loop is also 92 BPM, but you have a one-shot that's only 62 BPM. You want to resample the one-shot with delay at 92 BPM, so you simply apply the effect to your one-shot and the drum loop, even though you're not going to hit the drumloop pad. When you resample the one shot, the delay will be applied at 92 BPM, because the 404 can't run two separate delay times simultaneously. It defaults to the higher BPM. This is also the same way to set correct rhythmic timing on external sources.

And if your one-shot (or whatever) happens to be of higher BPM value than a pad with the correct timing, you simply change 62 BPM to 124 or 31 BPM so that it's count is less than the BPM you want. You'll have to adjust your delay settings though, since an old eighth beat will now be a quarter beat.

I give away a lot of my tricks 'cause I like the cats on here, but Huph just dropped some science for those who will catch it and use it right.

"This is also the same way to set correct rhythmic timing on external sources."

I did it like this:

I have a pattern which plays a muted sample. While the pattern is running I can set the FX-bpm for the external source by tapping on TapTempo.
So you can set the tempo like on a KaossPad if you use the SP for example as an external effect machine with a turntable (loop staion) set.

No problem, glad it helped.

This was a headache I had to figure out because I use my sampler as the final link in my setup: Turntables -> Mixer -> Stereo Delay -> 404. When I was getting started at this, I used the SP to play back beats I made on my computer, and to apply effects to my turntables. Kind of a glorified CD player and FX box. Early on, I didn't have the delay pedal, so I used the 303 for delays mostly. I would have a whole beat assigned to one pad, that wouldn't loop, that pretty much played out a 2 to 3 minute "song". In order to apply proper timing to my external source (the tables) I would usually record a dummy pad of silence to use as my "effect anchor", I guess you could call it.

Nowadays, the beats are constructed a little more on the fly, so I end up using whole banks for a song, rather than just one pad. I still do a lot of editing in my computer, but I'm working more live sequencing into our sets. And since I have a delay pedal now (the DD-20, go Boss!) I don't rely so much on the SP's rhythmic effects in live situations. I use it's weirder effects mostly.
