applying efx w/o retriggering/stopping a sample
Im running an mpc2500 which sends midi time/play/start data my 404sx. I use the mpc for the drum/percussive type samples and the 404 for the longer ones. Ive got patterns made, chaining together longer loops (32 bars and up) to make songs. When I have breaks in the percussive elements of my songs id love to be throwing in efx on the samples being played from the 404 program. The 404 efx section works from the last sample played. If I try to select a sample it will play it again from the start, which throws everything off. Is there a way to select a sample pad for efx w/o re-triggering it? Is there something else I could do other than pre-selecting the sample before the pattern is launched, so when its efx time its already selected the sample im looking to manipulate? Id love to be able to bounce around effecting different samples without having to knock the program off course (at least until the next sample is triggered)

I think you are referring to what you can do with effect grab (read the manual on it). There are def ways you can choose effects without them playing and drop em for brief moments (works great for tape echo).
Re: applying efx w/o retriggering/stopping a sample
nope, that will work if I wanted to quickly turn on/off effects, but even with the effect grab button held, it will still relauch the sample

fellow 2500 user, midid with an og 404 and i've never had that problem. only thing i can think of is to check gate/loop settings on the 404 samples but that's probably not the problem. fortunately you can record audio tracks on the mpc and do it real time as you wish, then have full control of everything on the mpc.
