Like Formal was saying, the sounds I was hearing (mainly trip hop, breaks & IDM) as a teenager in the late 90s early 00s were like some kind of dark art. What were the musicians doing? How were their songs made? Were those old albums by DJ Krush, Amon Tobin & DJ Shadow made using commissioned musicians? Growing up away from anywhere with a music scene, its not like it was easy to come across methods for how electronica & hip hop genres are made.MechaLove wrote:This is why I have a love/hate with this whole beat revolution thing. Long after hearing this music I started playing with bass guitar then got into producing/beat making. Like most honest people I discovered J Dilla & the LA beats movement after J Dilla passed away.
I'm jealous of folks getting into this kind of music now & over the coming years. The opening up of forums like this, youtube etc means that playing a sampler can be viewed on the same level as a guitar etc. Just look at someone like the sampler dude from The XX. Even if that means hapless pricks will jump the bandwagon, that'll happen with anything getting even a little exposure.
On the flipside- has anyone seen the documentary Scratch? The scene with sour grapes from the traditional music makers towards the DJ gear manufacturers was hilarious... There will be a backlash from both ends if things keep up like this.
Back on track though- Townie, if you're not using the MPC & you don't have a synth it doesn't sound like a hard choice...
