Go on ebay, they have a lot of old portable sony cassette-corders that have nice features depending on the model, some even have eq's built in. All the newer portable tape recorders are mostly low quality and lacking features for the price.

Lately, I've been concerned about buying something tape rollin like one of theese Tascams: MF-P01 or Porta02mkII portastudios. And maybe Fostex XR-3. Theese three are available in my area. They look pretty portable (not as much as that AKAI of course). Anyone used them? Any opinions?

The MF-P01 is poorly made with not enough features for a 4-track in it's price range, the mkII has better features and a better build so I'd take it out of the two choices. If you can, try and find one with Dbx noise reduction.

hey dont diss the MF-P01 8) . It has a real a real sick analog sound to it. It doesnt seems like its cheaply built either(compared to other modern cassette recorders). I been using it to record vinyl albums onto cassette.

Oops my bad Juxt I just used one and was not satisfied, but it really just depends on what you like to use. I like my 1-track Sony stereo cassette-corder more even though it isn't as complex for arranging as a 4-track but I can still hook up two mics and record real drum sounds and breaks then chop them up on the 303. I sample tapes too because they have a dope analog sound that people wouldn't recognize as vinyl since there aren't any snap, crackle, and pop but recording live shit in my house so it has that tape sound and putting it in the sampler is the creative and produces solid results.

word, I would rather have a regular cassette recorder- one that doesnt divide into tracks but I had mad trouble finding a cassette recorder that I would be satisfied with so i settled on the MF.

I was not familiar with track cassette recorders and was pissed when it wouldnt play on a regular deck- I spend a lot of time doing trial and error to figure out how to record it so it would play on a regular deck. I select track 1 and 2 for each side- in the manual it says not to select more than one track at once though(doesnt explain why). Does anybody know if its bad for the recorder?

yo that akai joint is SICK ! Must be mad rare tho. Cant find one ne where. But mainly im looking for a 2 track recorder. I got a tape player in my car and alot of times I will spend a day off out somewhere makin beats on the 404 and this way I can record my stuff to tape and listen to it in the car. Also I want something I can keep in m backpack along with my 404.

edit: I forgot to mention that I found this:http://www.walkmancentral.com/products/wm-d6c
which is perfect ! but it seems that on average on ebay they sell for over $150. Something like this would be perfect !
