This guy has, so it's definately possible.

Okay, so it's a sp303, but you should be able to use a sp404 with no problems...

One of the members here, An Owl (he only swings by here occasionally), has this set up & works pretty well for him.
I've got an ESX1 & SP-606. Great combo.
The ESX1 is a very different kind of sampler to the SP series. It's designed to make sample tweaking an almost instant game. Plus it balances phrase & studio sampling ideals really nicely.
Don't get me wrong, the ESX is just as limited as the SPs though. So it'll teach you the art of the workaround. Check out sauce's tutorial videos over at the electribe forums for an idea of how deep the ESX1 can go.

I've got a 404 + ESX.... cool combo, I'm only new to the ESX and the possibilities I'm still exploring..
I needa play around with routing and fx and stuff, things could get pretty crazy.. or maybe I'll just use them separate so I have more sources to run into my mixer..
It's a good mix though.. the ESX has the keyboard parts and the stretch parts,
the 404 can load big samples, the patterns arent locked at 16th resolution
I think in terms of producing music, having the 404 setup as a send/return on the ESX using the aux outputs would be awesomeness - Imagine the resampling that could happen!

I had the ESX and 404 for awhile, but eventually sold the ESX. I really liked the ESX, but having 5 samplers didn't make sense. Also my ESX was starting to get knob jitters on the start/end knobs and also the filter knobs. Shit straight pissed me off. My ESX also suffered from a lot of white noise and Power supply hum, those problems were fixed in later models. The midi on an ESX is weird too. You can only send midi on 3 channels (you can pick what channels to send) but only the 2 keyboard parts are useful for midi control.

I never got around to picking up the ESX. But now that I got a SP404(not to mention 202/505), I’d be down to use them together. But they’re getting rare. So I’d be saving up for the right one.
Used to have the EMX, but I lost it to the pawn shop. But I’d get the ESX before I got another EMX. But you never know.

Not the Esx, but I was actually using the original Es-1 in junction with a 202 for quite a long time. Eventually picked up the 404sx. Then more recently upgraded the Es-1 to an Elektron Model:Samples.
I gotta say tho, I still make drums on the Es-1 here and there. The 64 step sequencer is really nice. It has some fun built in effects, and you can really make your drums crack on it. Plus, for me at least, it's always fun using vintage gear like that.
I think the Es-1 though, for it's price, which is very reasonable, it's an incredibly powerful old school sampler. There's a lot it can do. You can even sequence a synthesizer with it.
