606 Distortion effect

Post by Sinapse »

recently discovered this (effect 36, Distortion) while playing around and it seems sick especially for applying to samples you can get a really wide range of tonal character I am kind of blown away by it fucking around with the Johnny Mathis record on the table right now...I guess the reason I ignored it was because I had a 303 first and the distortion effect on that is a bit heavy handed this one is way more subtle - any thoughts from the 606 users on this effect and how you use it?

thanx for sharing this, i never used this effect.
yes, it's different from the 303 one...
i by now use this to a j coltrane sax, this is strange, i have to practice better...
ot
personally i was surprised also by the guitar amp sim (lots of variety there!) and from the many of mastering fx (rotary, enhancher, space-d, stereoizer, low boost)...the effect that surpised me the most is the forward reverse! you can apply this to incoming audio! that's crazy for live things and other weird experiments...

yea man...the compressors on the 606 def lack the in your face thump that you find on other SP models but there are so many other efx like those you mentioned (Space D is very cool) you just have to dive in with it and experiment...also the lo fi processor on this thing is very good imo it can be more subtle then the 303/404 lo fi, just depends on what you want. I need a 303 or 404 around for their vinyl sim/compressors tho

maybe the 606 compressor is "weak" if compared to 303 or 404 one, i have to try the 606 vs 303...in any case the 606 compressor is far better than the "amost-inexistent" one on the 505...the filters too...and, let's say it, generally speaking all the 606 fx are better on this machine than on the 505 (i have it too)...
i have to try better the lo-fi processor...
ps
the master function/button is great too

distort a kick with distortion
put a filter on it with the other mfx 'filter'
not too much tho, just enough to cover up the static

re-sample that kick

run your sequence/beat etc with vinyl sim and compress on it. play with both the compressors and let me know if that kick punches through like a mawfuckin sidechain bruh

check out tumbling with drums...and the low boost on some bass samples.
PITCH is pretty dope too.

606 is a secret weapon.. it will take years to master and will probably be my longest living SP. the velocity pads are lush. I have as much fun using it live as I do the 404

LOOOL

will do...

I have had the joint for well over a year now and I am only barely starting to uncover how to use the efx in combination for some wild results.

cool tips man
this is mad science!
i have to discover all those secrets
you know, i rebought the 606 since 1 month nad half and i'm on it now. the first time, it was 2009, i didn't saw all those "secret treasures" and i sold it in a week...
now i use it as the "last box" where all the external sounds come (a mixer+all the other samplers/synths/grooveboxes etc are connected), i feel it gives a "soulful" and round sound to the whole thing into the DAW.

for my personal taste 6060compressor sounds good in itself yet, but i have to try your tricks...

one trick I learned while doin the battles was to turn little one second samples into long string samples (due to lack of good sample to work with)

I do this by setting the roll to 1/32 then turn on the tumbling effect in combination with reverb - then hold down the pad with the roll on. bounce to computer then sample it back using the same effects so it sounds less like a roll and more like a smooth string. ->u cant resample a roll so thats why i say computer

The lo-fi is A LOT of fun! It's not just a bitcrusher, it filters too. Oaxaca used it all over his Sacred Jewel Pieces EP and it sounds great, have a listen to it. He used the SP-404's lo-fi, but it sounds much the same as the 606's.

i'm trying it right now, this is weird!

other "hidden filters" are on distortion (like we said before) but try also fuzz effect, there is another one there (put drive all to left).

other tip:
have you tried the duck effect (when turn the mode all way to right) well hidden on the gate one? it has to be a sort of sidechain someway...

Yeah, the 606 has warm effects and just as good as the 303. with 47 effects you can't go wrong, plus the ability to combine 2 effects is even sweeter. I love the Isolator, thats like a basic filter and boosts the bass tremendously as well as cuts it out.

By combining the pitch shifter and the Isolator effect you can tinker with some wobbly basslines.
