2 internal banks plus 8 external (cf card), 12 pads per bank. A whole fucking lot of samples loaded at once. A shame the polyphony is limited to 12 voices.

the comment ^^ above about it being an mpc-lite is pretty accurate in all honesty....but i also have a mpc1K and VASTLY prefer the workflow and speed of the 505 to the 1K.

Yeah, you often hear those 606 vs. MPC1K or 505 against the 1K kind of opinions, but in reality these machines are generally quite different. It's not that easy to compare them objectively.

But I for one totally agree that the work flow is much better compared to the mpc1k.

606 for me. Wanted an mpc for forever, but they're oh so expensive, then I found the roland sp's and it was like the heavens opened up. I mainly use my 606 as a drummachine for jamming and doing drums in ableton. But I would love to add a 404 and do some "Jel" like live shows. Im anxiously awaiting the next round of sp's. MORE TRACKS PLEASE *cough cough* mike * cough*

Gotta be the 808ex for me, I love that thing. The first hardware I bought, took me a few years to really learn it but now, for quick and easy sampling/editing/playback its great. The effects are quality as usual, and you can create and sample some nice crunchy/vintage sounding synths. Its not exactly portable, its noisy (ZIP drive), only 4 voice poly, it crashes sometimes, d-beam never really gets used, discs just seem to die and the sequencer is... basic, but I love to play them pads, and if you slave it to an electribe or somethin you can have some FUN!

My old setup was Electribe ER1mkII---audio/MIDI--->SP808 + SP808ex and it rocked.

Things were simpler back then, ah, the good old days! I've got the 404sx now and its much better for taking with me and playing live stuff, but I still make most of my loops on my trusty 808 and sample it from there!

If you've got the compact flash version of the 404 can you make some samples out in the field and then put the cf into the 555 and have it read the samples?

That would be a great thing. Do some work on the portable SP and then transfer over to the more powerful machine for work at home.
