Looks like a damn toy but then so does the whole new-school SP series...

It looks cool, but whether its $700 worth of cool is a different story. For similar results, I'd recommend bhajis loops and an old palm...

Or a netbook+ korg nanokey and whatever version of reason will run on it. Thing does look cool though.

This thing is completely dedicated to music. No other handheld machine like it. Bhajis Loops is cool. Iphone and iPad are cool, but still take extras steps to actually create music. I have a handheld music fetish so I'm all over this device.

If you look at the specs it's actually pretty impressive.

Intel Atom CPU (so you could install windows or whatever else OS you want)
512mb ram
Touch Screen
Compact Flash Harddrive (solid state)
SD Slot.
USB slot runs in host mode
Dual 2000mah batteries
Dedicated hardware buttons and jog wheel
Audio in and Out
It runs meego (a linux variant dedicated for mobile machines. Made by intel and nokia)

From the demo they say there will already be games, emulators, web browsers (firefox) and other software you can install too.

Is $700 really expensive? HELL YES..... Do I see the price coming down? HELL YES

On a side note I just got another hand me down palm z72 special edition. It has 32mb ram, SD card slot and can run complex bhajis file in 44.1 mode. I'm pretty stoked on this, but after getting iphone and ipad I'm not sure where it will fit in besides for choppin and programming drum breaks.

This shit looks WAAAACK! For that price you could get an OP-1 or an ipad. I would just feel silly working on that goofy looking thing.

in theory i vote for the OP-1 too...

I don't know if I would compare these units to a 303 or 2k. Sure they can chop and load samples, but the iPad and Op are more about the interface and how that inspires and changes the way you think about making music. OP I think has 24 bit sample rate so it should good, I think the 1/8th inch out on iPad sounds fine. Not as good as an MPC, but when your samples are so dirty and everything is distorted "sound quality" is more of an aesthetic anyways. I hope that makes any kind of sense.

I see. Personally I don't really care about the "sound" of my sampler because I'm going to give it it's own sound with the effects mixing and technique I use. I think the difference in sound between units is really negligible at the end of the day. Although the 2k is pretty flat the time stretch has a unique sound. 303's sound comes from the effects in my opinion (vinyl sim!!). So I'm sure these new units will have their quirks as well.
