Do you know that feeling you get when you listen to a song you know from an album and right before it's ending you already have the song that usually follows it in your head? There're some transitions out there that are just too awesome and sometimes, I guess, the order of some songs alone can change the way you perceive them.

For example the ending of 'computer face//pure being' into the beginning of 'and the world laughs with you' on FlyLo's Cosmogramma, is one of my favourite moment on that album. Too bad I can't experience it on vinyl cause you have to switch sides exactly at that point D:
Some other favourite transition of mine would be on Deftones - Around The Fur the transition from 'mascara' to 'around the fur' or The Mars Volta - De-Loused... between the first two songs.

Just wanted to drop this *g* do you know any other dope transitions?

Damn dude, you just picked out three albums from my CD collection so this was an easy check-out. Thanks! Awesome point you've raised to about the importance of transitions too.

Yeah, there's something about the TMV intro- sounds like they wrote it more or less as one track & cut in two. It uses more or less the same guitar stabs & similar drumming, same tempo & key etc in the intro as parts of the main song... So its more less guaranteed that they'd flow.

That FlyLo transition does similar things in a more subtle way, with the use of a similar tempo & rhythm. Plus all those little noises really make each song feel related to the other on that album. Again, its all written coming from the same place & uses the same techniques so it feels uniform. Incredible album too.

Can't say I agree about the Deftones tracks though. Likely just my ears, not saying this in a negative sense- just a different & subjective perspective. The transition of Around the Fur into Rickets sounds more natural over here: the guitar noise leading into that heavy-as drum track feels right.

Transitions between songs forming a something larger & repeating key riffs between songs is what makes post rock & weirdo metal bands like Red Sparrowes, Tusk and Godspeed (natch) so great.

Just remembered: didn't Dilla do a bit of this on Donuts as well? Haven't listened to it in a while, so just what he was up to with his sample choices slipped my mind.

Then there's DJ Shadow using some of the key samples for Organ Donor in Stem/Long Stem (check it from 3:37) and the David Axelrod melody from Midnight In A Perfect World in Transmission 2...

Its stuff like that which makes albums so much more impressive than a collection of songs. Transitions are something easily forgotten but really powerful.

However there's been a few times I've listened to a song with a transition in it so drastic I've pulled the CD right out of the player thinking 'is this still the same album?'. Seriously unexpected left turns like this one in Absolut Dunkel:Heit by Red Harvest are genius moves when they're done right...

...Even if what I've linked isn't to the taste of the other SP fam.

^sorry for the rant!

all music regardless of genre should ride out like a floyd album . flylo and tmv are incredible at making the experience seamless with mental clues foravid listeners. Dope thread + i too miss out on that dope transition on the flylo thanks to flipping the record over
