It's about the same as putting your beats on sum SP pads and just turning knobs/fx for the crowd as the songs play. I've never seen anybody rock a multitrack hardware DAW on stage as their only piece of gear in a performance. He just gets style points for being original and also doing what he does very well.

I would be DJ Mute Master if my stuff was on ninja tune too ;)

i miss this recorder mute style, i used it many times when i use to record on recorders...

formal, get an mpc or an sp505/606: it's not exactly the same multitrack mute style (it works as a "one-shot" mute style=it works with one-shot samples, not like a reocorder), but however you have tracks to mute...

maybe the only sampler able to act like that is the mighty sp808 (what about the mc808/909?)...i found also that useful function on the mc-09 phraselab, but other than that (and some good basses) that machine wasn't very funny...

there's a whole bunch of videos about this, some guy who made a drum machine from a 4-track cassette recorder. Analog sampler, I guess.

unfortunately it is just a mute-machine basically.. hes not actually telling it when to play samples, its just playing them constantly.. analog sampler would be crazy!

still.. i like this kinda thing :)

Did you see the guy who made cassette-decks using bicycle wheels?

yet the idea in itself is totally crazy!!
basically he midified the tascam audio recorder but then? how this evil thing works? he made a sequencer out of it...nice.
great anyway!

Hey man I will try to explain it... (at least how it seems to be done)

each tape track contains one sound..

eg the snare track.. the snare sound is recorded multiple times onto the tape at even intervals (16ths I guess).. so what you have is a snare just playing constantly...

then he built a 'mute'/'unmute' sequencer - what happens is when all the steps are off, the track is muted.. if you turn on a step, it unmutes a 16th note space on that track (so you hear one of the snare sounds come through)

then he has added some knobs that control a delay so that he can offset the sounds of a certain track.. eg have the snare sound delayed by 50ms so it plays 50ms after the start of the 16th note

etc, etc..

basically it is a mute/unmute sequencer, the sounds just play all the time underneath...

Interestingly this is how I tricked live version 7 into having a step sequencer! (using a drumrack with 16 of the same samples on it then cycling through each one and muting the ones i didnt want coming through)

pretty much what i do live, the mc's dont really want live beats , they want the strict time and original instrumentals so i just trigger beats on the pads one at a time. dont even turn knobs, just drink beer . some jerk off dubstep dj stole the little cap off one of my knobs,. cause i left my sampler on the table and he opened .
