Digging Ideas?

Some record shops here have a 1€ bin with all sorts of crap in it, sometimes when I feel like it I just grab 5 of those records if they don't look too cheesy and take em home.

Plenty of good stuff on those indeed, but I'd look into a specific era you're interested in, as that will give you a much wider scope of records you could check out / dig.

When it comes to hiphop, any soul record will do though, especially for drum kits.

Have you tried sitting in front of a television for a few minutes? I personally hate tv, but I watch a music program or two, maybe you can just plug the sp to the tube and let your creativity flow...

How do you mean it then?

library records are albums made for 50s, 60s, 70s advertising guys. they had sounds (songs or just solo instruments) in various styles, so ad dudes or whoever could put some music over their radio spots or tv theme intros or whatever. bruton did a lot of these, as did 'themes international' and 'dewolfe music'. these can be fun...check out Thes One's lifestyle marketing album.

as far as other digging ideas go - if it were me, I'd bring a portable turntable and headphones to try out the records, if yr spot doesn't have a listening booth. if the owner still doesn't want you listening to records, then choose a different spot. seriously. there are million places that have vinyl, and if you have a portable, yr set. even if you don't (i don't, for ex) you can find record stores w/ listening booths. then you can try out all sorts of shit.

Jazz? I don't know if you're into labels..but if you're looking for some jazz with alot of space an ambiance I suggest trying out looking at the ECM label. Minimal jazz, you can manipulate and do what you want with many off the joints. John Abercrombie, Ralph Townser, Steve Reich, a buncha cats I can't recall. Jan Garbarek.

I don't know if you're into labels..but if you're looking for some jazz with alot of space an ambiance I suggest trying out looking at the ECM label

I know this is an old thread, but with the influx of new users I thought this might be helpful...

I think that the above two suggestions are almost guaranteed to net you something useable.

also in my experience the only real luck i've had with digging is to get into a good rhythm with your local shops and check back weekly. before i moved there was this savers near my house(chain thrift store) that put out new records every monday. So I would hit it up every single monday and I got more dope records in the few months that I did that than years of digging before it. I think that there is still dope stuff to be had in the thrift shops, but it goes quick! there where some days when I'd come home with a stack of records that would have set me back a few hundred in a shop that knew what's up, but i was able to cop the whole thing for like $10.

I just think that you have to make it a part of your weekly routine(at least) to really have good success.

lol, this takes me aback to a reference Kevin Brown (http://www.myspace.com/kevbrown) had made a reference to one of his comrades, Oddisee (http://www.myspace.com/oddisee720). He said something about Oddisee purchasing an LP on the premiss that if the album has a dude w/ an afro on it it's got a soulful part.

I guess that works. Ill have to try it sometime

To resurrect a really interesting & useful old thread:

I've found that some old records & compilation/collector series come with notes on tempo & the song's key. That kind of info makes building tracks waaaaaay simpler. For stuff like classical music, traditional Indian & jazz its really useful info.

I may not always like what's on those records, but if it has songs in any minor key then the shop's just guaranteed a sale. I've always found bits & pieces worth sampling off records with that kind of info.

Info about a song's composition means you can start fitting it into your beats really easily & start doing stuff like chord changes and blending different tracks together.

I don't have a turntable at the moment, but I used to have 1200's back in the day. If I could do it all again, I'd probably be a little more cheap about collecting vinyl. I'd mostly stick with thrift stores, and maybe some antique stores, and try to get as much vinyl as my budget could allow. Not really for rare records, but for cheap records, that I'd sample melodies, strings, organs, etc. I'd maybe even consider getting some of those christian records you always see at thrift stores, just to try and find something that might work if chopped properly. It's not a priority for me right now, but maybe someday I'll want to do a little crate digging like I used to back in the day. (But back then it was mostly techno/house/breaks/dnb I was collecting)
