i was reading an old back issuse of scratch magazine and found out pete rock used the sp 505 to do all the production for bumpy knuckles album "industry shakedown" found the album gave it a listen the production is straight gutter all that with only a four track sequncer that shit is crazy. im glad i just copped that and a sp 303 love the lo fi sound i get off of them they sound like my old sp 1200 but with way more sampling time.

Industry Shakedown was a really good album, the beats were amazing. didn't realise Pete's contributions were 505 made. just goes to show the power of and versatility of the SP range

It'll sound cliché but good artists can make awesome stuff on any gear once they got used to them.

What peeps should realize is that those so-called "toy samplers" are indeed quite powerful but they don't have the powerful sequencing abilities of say an MPC or a DAW.
But for that real hiphop flavor,a Sampletrak,a 303,404 and the 505 are more than enough.
It's all about keeping it simple and being creative.

I just checked info about that album and it cant be true. Because the album was released in June 2000. But the SP-505 was released only a year later somewhere in the end of 2001. So it gotta be a mistake there somewhere.

imagine if 50 didnt have a deal and wasnt signed to a label ,that he still had the cred on concrete instead of on the clubs,that he was in pre em mental mode with a sick flow,that he was hungry. Imagine this but he still had dre producing him.Thats the equivalent pete put down when he got behind the roland sp-505 for BUMPY KNUCKLES.

he probably didn't use it for Industry Shakedown,but I know that he did produce a few tracks fot other Freddie Foxx albums that came after this one.
And I remember too reading about Pete Rock using the sp-505 in Scratch.
Btw...Kev Brown also uses a 505 alongside his Mp 2kxl

He could've got one before they were officialy released so that Roland could get some press of him using their products kinda like what they do for Rza, he had the MV before it was out so he could play around with it and make short promo videos. It's just a nice relatively inexpensive way to get a lot of street cred from a respected producer that could really make nice beats on anything they used not just Roland products.

im surprised more cats dont use the sp 505 if your doin that boom bap type shit its the bomb its weird i dont even use my mv 8800 or sp 606 anymore i just midi up my sp 505 to my mpc 1000 with jjos 4.95 and its a wrap .its like syncing an sp1200 to an mpc 3000 straight crack music.

wat up homie wat kind of set-up got mine is basic as a motherf$u@k*r mpc 1000 with jj os 4.95 sp505 pentium 4 2.6GHZ and digi oo1 m audio keystation 49 . im selling my mv 8800 and sp 606 they just sit to the side dope machines but the little set-up i got now sp505 and mpc 1000 lets me work faster.

waddup fellas.

got a question about this midi setup between the MPC 1k and the 505... so are you using the MPC to sequence your 505 samples... and also to trigger it? Basically all midi control from the MPC and all sounds from the 505?

Do you run into polyphony issues with the 505? or at that point do you bring in sequence tracks that are triggering the MPC?

If I understand this right, I could run a similar setup with my Yamaha RM1x... which has solid midi and a decent amount of sequencer tracks. It lacks the pads for playing, so I guess it would require midi from my SP-555 to record the sequence and then reversing the midi to play the sequences back.
