We just discussed thanksgiving this very day! We don’t celebrate that in Sweden…. But we have the impression (from “media”, from Donald duck to movies) that its an very important holyday in the states.

In Sweden we have a “national day”, like 4th of july. But very few know why we celebrate that day. “Its an day of, hurray”. We are not celebrating a lie but some thing few know anything about… Stupid!

You Americans how would you rank your holydays. From most important and down…?

nice post a.D. (the long one).

Anways, no one in Europe celebrates Thanksgiving except for maybe some US ex-pats, and the only mention of it outside of that circle is in US TV shows.

But lately Halloween has been gaining ground in continental Europe. Yes, I am aware of it being supposedly British, but it is being popularized through the US mass media.

I did my research a while back, and the way I understand it, thanksgiving is a celebration of the betrayal and subsequent marginalisation, colonisation and extermination of the native americans.

Pretty much.

Edit: If only the Natives got an entire month like the African Americans...then maybe we/our history would be more understood and respected.

As much as I know about why America is celebrating thanksgiving is
When first Europeans came to America they ate all their food supplies before the winter and Native Americans approached to them and gave them food so they survived the winter. Turkey, corn, cranberries... those are all foods that origin from America and the pioneers did not know those as they were from Europe... they were also not skilled farmers, but mostly people from cities.
Am I right?

^^ we only get 28 days... sometimes 29... our 'month" is a short lived one... but besides that... i really dont believe in giving a "race" an honorary month... i think that history of any race should be taught on all levels. i mean. im black my girl is spanish and we have bi racial kids... i dont want them to think that black history month outweight cinco de mayo or any other holiday related to their inheritance.

i feel shitty that they are learning the false truths about thanksgiving in school. i can teach them but right now their minds wont comprehend what im talking about. and ive been kicked out of school for questioning things like religion before. i just dont get the reason for the falsehood of thanksgiving. nor do i get the "patriots" oof american that say this land was founded by our forefathers.
