Los Angeles -To Be or Not to Be?

I am considering making a move from Dallas to L.A. and I just wanted to get some feed back on the city and what not. I do play music and would be looking forward to getting involved with the scene out there. I’ve been a few times on short trips, but I have never gotten a chance to go out any of the events like Dublab sessions or Fatbeats etc..L.A. folks, how do you like it? I hear mixed feelings about L.A. (and I definetly know there are pro’s and con’s to any city) What don’t you like about it? Are you “trying to get out” too? Jobs, I would definitely be getting my hustle on with the job search prior to moving out there. At this moment in time (California in general) is it “possible” to get a job out there? –I hear so many horror stories about the job market in CA being horrid right, I think it would make anybody second guess a move..I do know that the city is expensive..and would be open to a room mate situation..How’s the music scene? Is it embracing to new acts? What are some decent areas? I have a couple of friends in the Echo Park and Silverlake areas, so I’ve craigslisting the shit out those area’s..any others? Yo, I just moved to Seattle a couple of months ago after living in L.A. (Highland Park neighborhood) for about nine years, and before that I lived in Indiana all my life. Before moving out there I already had friends waiting for me to move in, and we started a band right away and played non stop for about six years. Then, when we stopped recording all the time and drift our separate ways, I realized that I hated living there. If you can surround yourself with a good crowd and keep entertained you might like it. Otherwise just be glad that you can get liquor from literally almost every corner. I am very much an outdoors person, and you have to drive pretty far to get somewhere where you can't hear the buzz of cars on the highway. Everything is covered in concrete and there are not many trees, not alot of shade, and it's dirty, yucky grey smog. L.A. is known of course for people trying to 'make it' and being pretentious, but I think it's pretty easy to make friends. Here, not so much. I thought the people out here in Seattle would be nicer but they're a bunch of FUCKFACES. The food in L.A. is great and if you end up going i'll recommend some bombass restaurants. I don't remember what Dallas is like but one the main reasons I moved to Seattle was to escape the monotonous weather and the terrible heat. Oh yeah, and the city is so huge and spread out that you have to drive or take the bus literally everywhere. I hate driving so I sold my truck and used the money to get out here haha. Now I ride a bike and can get around fast (all streets have wide bike lanes). Good move with looking for a place in Silverlake or Echo Park... those are the best places to live for sure. And the Eagle Rock music festival is really fun. There's some Hip-hop stuff going on but sometimes you have to drive out to the middle of concrete nowhere to get to it. Low end theory is cool and smack dab in a convenient place, but so so crowded. Getting a job is difficult anywhere I guess but try to get it close to home if you don't like sitting in traffic... this is why I quit driving, I have a short fuse for annoying shit that requires attention. Wow I sound like an asshole! If you've got a music thing going on you can get shows around town, no problem. Like I said, when the performing-all-the-time high fizzled out, I was depresssssed and wanted out. But we're all different ya know. I don't care much for the nightlife anymore, just stay home and play with my toys, but there's plenty of it out there should you decide to go.

I just moved out here too,well about 6 o so months ago now..unfortunately we've gotten a place in Federal Way, which is 20 minutes outside the city and it's nothing but strip malls and big corporate chains & shit.Can't wait to live in the city,but it's mad expensive-and with kids,it's hard to take the time to ride the bus in and out of the city on a regular basis.

cool! We should kick it mang. My girl and I live on Capitol hill. I've met wizdumb and vaughnilla from the forums in Everett and saw them play. I might be playing a set myself on 12/11 at the place they usually play, it'd be cool if you could come out. If you play live we should do a show sometime.

LA sounds like such a nice idea, but when I think about it critically I always wonder, isn't it like really over saturated? I can't imagine what something like digging for instance is like out there where producers are a dime a dozen.

I have lived in Los Angeles since 1990, and I'm 26. I used to think it sucked, but a few years ago I realized this city is really awesome. There is always something to do, if you have a car.

Lived in the Bay Area for many years, visited LA very frequently. My impressions of Dallas are kind of like a Texan LA.

- Driving (lots), smog, oppressive summer heat
+ Culture/arts, food, music.

What kind of industry are you in? If you can find a job I'd say it'd be an enjoyable move. "Making it" as a beatmaker is another story.
