Kweli changed his sound and never lived up to potential. Don't forget the gems though.

Ghostface? This is from "cold outside" off cuban 2-- If you listen to hip hop and don't feel this, well, I'll just say I don't get you.

They found a two-year-old strangled to death
With a Love Daddy shirt on in a bag on the top of the steps
Police blowin' niggas, narcs and judges
Me and son had beef, I had to murk him we supposed to be brothers
'Cause he came home frontin feelin' like I owe him somethin'
'Cause I'm getting' money, drive a lil' somethin' somethin'
Lanay got AIDs, 5 kids smoked out
House is brick, bills haven't been paid in days
Her Brooklyn man's a molester
Court case and the crime's raisin'
Swastikas on the church, they Satan
Holiday season is here and I'm vexed
Who the fuck made Christmas up and fuckin' broke it?
Ain't makin' no sense
Newports is $7.50, a box of Huggies is off the meat rack
She's back, thirty days, she relapsed
Our troops need to leave Iraq
And rap niggas need to go on strike
So we can get more cash, 'cause

On some other shit- Don't get me wrong- I love hip hop that touches on politics and social issues, but in a realistic way. That whole circle of ill bill/la coka(though to me Slaine and Everlast keep it on some more true to life shit) immortal tech jedi mind is some calculated bullshit. A revolution CAN happen in america-but not by taking to the streets with guns, etc. As far as Doom- he's just dope. From the way he ressurected himself, to the way he gets me laughing with lines like "holy moly get a load of her rolly polly"and making some "how the fuck did he think of that" rhymes out of everyday phrases,to creating the style of talking about himself like he's describing someone else-you hear mad m.c.'s do that now.I think a lot of "beatmaker/producers" get into making beats without an appreciation of the m.c. side of things and don't really relate. Shit, I'd rather hear Doom over some preem pete rock type shit that 3/4ths of the beats he spits on.Gza-just what his name means- genius. Listen to the Gza/Muggs album if you wanna hear a true lyricist with concepts on some grimy ass production.De La-still innovating. Black Thought-should be on everyone's all time greatest list.Kweli- amazing lyricist by any standard, just an annoying voice at times. Hi Tek shoulda kept working with MOOD though as well, that shit was kinda fucked.
Hip Hop you HAVE to like if you like hip hop- Diamond District ( Kev Brown, Odisee, Roddy Rod,Grap Luva, etc.) That's my new shit, even though they've all been doing their thing forever. M.C. you're NOT supposed to like but always comes ill-ahem- Kanye.

pretty much summed up what i would say at this point in this thread, except i would of used a different ghost song (although i guess thats much more relevant, everyone knows he was dope before, but that shits recent and its heavy, he always tells the illest stories in the craziest ways), though i don't know if i'd prefer doom over pete rock beats, i could see premiere pullin it off, its gotta be the right kinda beat though, a little eccentric and definitely loose, and pete rock just don't go that loose in my eyes (ears?)

oh and as far as the roots go, i was just sayin what i've learned about quest over the years, i respect them heavily as a group, but i still feel similar to you teewok about their music, a lot of it just makes me wanna hit the skip button when i try to bump it, although if you put on their catalog at a party and just let it shuffle it usually is a good way to keep me happy as well as all the mindless radio zombies

Oh no, not De La lol! I like 3 Feet High and Rising but I listen to it more for the production. I think Prince Paul did a crazy job on that. I swear there are like over 80 different tracks chopped up to create that whole album. I'm also a Roots fan. Malik B and Black Thought together go hard. It Just Don't Stop, Episodes, Step Into The Realm, 100% Dundee, Dynamite..these are all crazy production wise as well as lyrically. I must admit though I wasn't really feeling much after Things Fall Apart though.

The more that I get into beat making, the less I like Hip Hop. I love the beats...but there are very few people I will buy an album from who are trying to make "Hip Hop".

I think the production work he did on the album was mad dope and innovating.. hes like a orchestra with beats bringing in different elements/samples

just sad De La made the list lol.

hip hop I should like but don't... a lot of early ass shit.. a lot of early rap records I could not get into whether it was because I felt it was too simplistic or I just didnt feel nothing from it
