You know how it is Simon, I'm like the J Beiber of hip hop- minus the dashing good looks and talent.

Buying something only to realize I didnt need it in the first place and then going back to FL Studio!

me and you must be the same dude. fl studio keeps callin me. so im fighting myself to just chop samples in it and normalize em. then i blank out, and wake up programming a beat in it with the fpc. its weird. i cant stay away from making beats in it, the browser is amazing and i even make loops tappin samples from the library, then im like...wellllll, might as well program this right quick, next thing you know, i got a loopy ass beat that i cant breakdown.
FUCKIN FL STUDIO!!!...

Sooo the 16 bar beat is great, but it sorta goes nowhere. I have a million of these things, and I never feel inspired enough to go back and build new parts. I'd rather just make another NEW beat. That's also why I 'release' so little material.

+1, I have a similar issue.
What I've started doing is finding the key of all my little beatlets and then stringing together ones that are in the same key. Then I take the samples from the combined beats and see if I can make up some new patterns. Also showing your half-beats around to friends who make music can yield some fun stuff.

I got a buddy who makes these endlessly mutating beats that never really go anwhere but are just infinite jam sessions. That's a better problem to have imho since you chop out sections and resequence that bitch into something sparkly.

I hate it when you can't seem to get 'in the zone' when making beats... 2 many distractions such as an idiot of a flat mate constantly buggin' you, spending 2 much time at work, having to do every day boring shi*t such as cooking, cleaning, washing and not enough time well spent making beats and not having the space, time or energy 2 do so!..

not having enough space to use my gear together effectively. if you only have a one bedroom apartment and are married, finding ways to hook up multiple pieces and a computer can be a proper pain in the ass.

Part I hate most is when you spend all the time diggin for records, sitting down listening to them all, sampling/chopping on the machine, but then NEVER doing anything with the samples.

Like saying, "I'll take a break for now and come back to it later (but you never do)".

Then when I get around to making beats again I just want to start fresh so I dump all the files onto the computer to rot away forever...

That's a rut i'm familiar with. The trick there is to get into the habit of saving your finds to your computer, be it pc or mac in a format that you can easily browse and transfer into the unit. If i cant do that, i find that I end up underusing my phrase samplers.

When it's time to commit the sounds in my head to the SP, and give them the most definitive reading I can, I avoid all my favourite artists, especially records that have seriously affected me, because It's hard to escape the influence of people like Momus or Tricky, and they know it.

IMO transcending your favourite records while being heavily influenced by them distinguishes a great musician, and shredding styles as a rule will get my, and the whole worlds respect.

The parts I hate are:

Paying for records. who doesnt?
Clearing out the memory from the SP 303...takes a while.
Chopping on the MPC1k without JJOS.
My habit of hoarding left over .WAVs from old beats.
Being disrupted while recording.
Losing samples due to a glitch.
retracing your steps to remake a beat that was accidentally erased--never sounds the same again.
Not having enough time to do more projects.

^^^^^ if your from the uk, there are loads of "recycle" type websites of people giving things away, from beds to crates of records. my mate got a load of wax free a while back. is hit and miss, but its free and everything can be sampled and played with really. check your local paper aswell.

and on the set up situation, im at my gf's parents house and can never hook ish up. all heads phones, mac/launchpad on desk 404 on my lap. getting a flat in january and cannot wait. monitors!!!!!!!!
