This wasn't meant to be an argument, it is just a post based on ones personal preferance or opinion, that is what a forum is for along with advice. Music is like food, it don't matter what you call it, if it's good...it's good despite brand or label.
I don't think Madlib is overrated the guys is talented i will say his beats are really raw tho. You can't really trick me into liking something if I feel it, I feel it, if I don't, I don't. Also the late J Dilla wouldn't sound the same if it wasn't for Madlib, I think he had an influence in Dilla's late sound. as for Flying lotus that guy is a genius I wouldn't call him overrated. I know a lot of you like to keep it underground but that's how I feel about those producers. They've been in the game for a while i think they earned their respect.
Madlib did have an influence on Dillas late sound- but no more than Dilla had on his. They worked together to kinda create that lo-fi heavilly compressed ,sloppy swing style . But for both of them, that style doesn't by any means define their sound. The dopest thing about Dilla/Madlib is they could/can sit down and make ANY style of beat, better than most who might specialize in one of those styles. If you wanna talk genius- adult swim beats are cool-but look back to some shit like the Bomb Squad who created Public Enemy's classic tracks with stand alone samplers chopping miniscule bits and pieces from several different records for each beat-tedious, ground breaking work that had never been done let alone thought of before and was never close to being duplicated...or on some strictly instrumental shit-D.J. Shadow in the mid 90's making "Entroducing" with nothing but an mpc-60 & vinyl.

i'm ok with this, totally. bomb squad rules. those were pioneeristic times. dj shadows done fine works with not many things too. now let's see if the laptop generation (how to call them? i think that Lotus himself define himself as a sort of laptop artist...) can push the music to a next level...

Fuck yeah, I can dig that. Hank Shocklee should be listed as underrated, thanks.
theres politics in mainstream/underground music. its obviouly a popularity contest and once u get ur name at a certain level u can do no wrong. mf doom for example he dont even have to show up at shows anymore , but he continues to pack house. its hard to put lotus and sam in that list because u got so many kids tryin to do there sound some might duplicate it well, but they originated that signature sound. alot of producers dont even have a signature sound and just blend in with the millions of other kids makin beats. but theres plenty of producers who make music just as heavy or even better than alot of the heavyweights. they just dont have that machine behind them or that namebrand.
btw i didnt know necro was still alive havent heard his music since 05.lol

u may think lotus is a labtop artist but he used 303's and other hardware in the past. and made very crazy beats on them that will never get released. he put in work on the hardware and now using software.

hi man, yes, i remember that Lotus used the 303 (and other machines, maybe the sp505 too...) and i have confidence on the fact that this generation can do a decisive step forward on the music. i'll wait.
(for now the music that i found really innovative in this decade is the dubstep)
I think part of the reason why people say the Dillas, the Fly Los and the Panda Bears etc of this world are over rated is because you got a whole bunch of people running around saying their names like it makes them special or have a more refined taste in music or something just because they know of them, not because they really like their music per se, or that it really does anything for them. I mean I guess we can't really judge anyone or really know what is going on in their head or heart when they listen to something but I've experienced a lot of people who seem to just..how can I put it..... be on certain artist's dicks just for the novelty.
Totally not the artist's fault, but annoying none the less
