I know its tabu to even mention 'libs wackness in here. That's why many are in this forum to begin with. If he announced that he ditched the sp's for Ableton live or something, how many would do the same?

madlib beats are ok but i never put him on a pedastal. he is all over the place with his, although sometimes good. sometimes its annoying to grab a cd of his and not know that the fuck your gettin into. gotta have some ground if you think your gonna jump from it to reach the sky. that dude just levitates. but i do like his music. but out of 100, i like 20. you know. but he makes a lot of fuckin beats so thats good. and black milk isnt over-rated, lots of people dont even know who the fuck he is, and he is good. i found out about him and sort of stuck with him since then, his stuff has gotten progressively better with each album, percussion, sampling and choppin. so whats makes someone over-rated. are you over-rated once alot of people like you. then its like you gotta sabatoge yourself to be respected in the hip hop community. his music is dope. flows and all. and he puts his time in, which you can tell. honestly i think the most overrated producer in hip hop is j-dilla. ive heard everything he's done, even the shit that wasnt released, like mpc tracks and a bunch of other unnamed tracks of his. same as madlib. make a library of music and its like 20 out of 100. except j dilla had a bunch of gay soul beats that sounded like rnb which i didnt dig at all. like with slum village. whatever tho.
overrated- underrated. good tunes is good tunes.

madlib is kool, beat konducta was kool too, he has a good ear for findin' samples or loops. black milk is kool too.

i actually got an sp-808 first before i even heard of madlib and when i heard some his music was made on the sp-303, i was like damn, "i wonder how it would be like if he knew of the sp-808 and made beats on it?" a 4-track w/ a sampler...

if he ditched the sp then that's kool too, ill stick w/ my sp. i suck at software applications(live, reason etc.) i can never get my head wrapped around them, not knocking them cause they are dope and heard catz make dope stuff on em...

sorry to stray off the topic...

a overrated producer, can't really think of one??? every producer imo is "unique" in their own way..., whether they are whack or not.., so like "springwater" said, "overrated-underrated, good music is good music."

I havent heard Black Milks latest joint. It's just a name I hear a lot, I don't dislike what he's doing, just don't get all excited about it. I am a Madlib fan from 2005 and earlier with the exception of Stoney Jackson which I love. It's just my taste that I don't like the structure of alot of his Beat Konducta joints with absolute randomness that never allows me to get into it. Some people like it, that's thier opinion although I believe it has become a bit of a fad where some people trick themselves into thinking they like it.
I do think J-Dilla may be overrated since his death but, his beats are good for the most part.

Timbaland=WAY OVERRATED.

For me it's the artists of the mainstream of the underground, which would be Madlib, Dilla, FlyLo and Samiyam.
They are/were all very good, but I think they get more hype than they deserve.

I don't think any of those producers that everyone has mentioned even make music with this is mind. Really, c'mon guys with the rating...there is going to be shit you don't like and shit you do like. What are you really saying when you consider them "over-rated"...rated on what? being highly observed/known/coppied/followed?

I like a lot of producers and musicians the same. I would'nt go as far to say something like "these are the over-rated bunch...and these are the under-rated...let it be known."--which is what I am getting from this.

There is a disconnection from what the Artist wants to do and what the audience is anticipating. You are probably not gonna like the path the Artist takes...but an Artist is free from judgement.

this is interesting.
personally, when i hear phrases like "flying lotus is the jimi hendrix of his generation" i think that something is not in the right place...
if sidechain, nintendo sound and swing are consider the "innovation" then something is wrong i think (from just a critical point of view i mean)...this (nintendo/sidechain/swing) is maybe a "picture" of what sound is "now", but please don't talk about jimi hendrix dear Mary Ann Hobbs...
ps
Cosmogramma is a good album indeed

overrated, underrated, its just a critique. same thing you do with movies, fine arts, games and almost everything on the face of this earth. even though the artist is free from judgement when he creates, he knows he will be judged once its pressed. thats what we are here for, and this forum. rating hardware, software and musicmakers.

word, whenever there is talk of overrated/underrated people are making their view of someone's creative work dependent on what (a lot of) other people think, and saying those people are wrong... there's no right or wrong in taste... and music is all about taste.

If you make shit that pleases a lot of people and you will end up being considered 'overrated' - meaning "too generally popular for me as obscure music lover"... it's a disavowal that most of the time doesn't have shit to do with the music, but with its popularity, breaking down niche walls, or stuff like that.

like when cops become cops, your automatically loved or hated. or shot at. just a part of the job. same with producers, you'll either be loved, hated or shot.

As far as J-dilla- I see people saying he's "overrated" since his death, people like me that say he was "underrated" before he passed,etc... but when speaking of this I'm talking about in the eyes of the consumer. Within the small circle of legendary hip hop producers- Preem, Pete Rock, Q-Tip, Large Pro, Marley Marl, Rza, Hi-Tek... they ALL considered him to be one of the best BEFORE Dilla died. Not only one of the best but an innovater in drum programming and chopping techniques. Not to mention the super heavy compression that SO many producers are using now. So personal opinon or not, saying he is/was overrated is ridiculous-and that's just a fact point blank. Everybody's gonna have joints you like more than others, some you don't like at all- personally I don't like Dillas synth heavy stuff too much, and wish he woulda been a little more true to himself on the rhyme tip. But for someone to big up Black Milk and then call Dillas Slum beats/ soul beats "gay" is insane, lol. Black Milk would tell you himself he wouldn't be doing what he does how he does it if it wasnt for Jay.He layed Black Milks entire foundation. I'm not trying to be on a soapbox, but come on....
As far as whether or not this should be discussed, who cares? We're killing time on a beat forum. My "overrateds"? Fucking Necro-Half dudes beats are 2-4 bar loops & he's a scumbag. And Flying Lotus- I'm just not getting the whole genius tag.Don't think that his family ties weren't a huge reason for him getting the shine he has. Last- Ant.
Oh yea- my one solitary reason for getting a 404 was that it was 250 bucks a couple years ago and can do basically anything an mpc can do and more in some ways. That's all cared about. I didn't know who had done what on it. I've used the eps,asr down to the sampletrak- but I still love the 404 more than any of those.
