in lonestars defense i read your post and kinda thought the same thing... "record? record samples? patterns? vocals?" it IS a kinda broad topic on an audio site about samplers. sarcasm is rough to interpret on the internet but the more info you give in a question the faster you get answers to what youre looking for.

i have a stupid set up. i work on one machine and sample/record into the other. after i sample my audio and export to the memory card i drag the file into the computer. from there i do nothing and either let things die/get lost on the hard drive or upload them to the internet. i only edit with my machines aside from basic silence cutting and file size stuff.

As I always finish tracks on a PC, the obvious thing is to record into that - but I don't. I use a digital 8 track. The basic patterns from an Electribe, the 404 has samples I want plus a synth for melody. I'll jam out for maybe 15mins, perhaps add 1 or 2 overdubs. Then I export the multitracks into the PC and edit like mad in Sonar. Editing can take a while even when I only have 3 or 4 tracks because of the length of the takes - but I don't have the discipline to do only 3 or 4 mins if I'm enjoying it.

Getting fresh samples for the 404 is something else. I've been hooking the line input to the satellite TV receiver and channel hopping to get bit's and pieces. International & Religion channels are a rich source for something different (to me!). Radio isn't much use where I am in the world. I'm disappointed trying to find TV channels showing old B&W movies - especially B movies.

Jim

I usually just run the sound source into the recording device.
