Can anyone else elaborate or think of any other reasons to stick with the o.g. 404 as opposed to the 404SX?

My first piece of gear was a roland MC307 new from a music local shop. Shortly after I got a free Roland MS1 from my sister. This was back in 1998-2000ish.

I just played around with them and never got into it. (had absolutely no idea how it all worked) I was playing guitar in a band at that time so that became more important; not to mention cars, girlfriends and computer music appz like reason and FL. After the newness wore off I sold both of them.

Since then I got another mc307 and fully know how to use it and sequence all my external gear (tricky little machine). It became a little goal of mine to get it back and learn how it all works instead of relying on software all the past years.

Now I sequence imy sp404 and Zoom sampletrak all via the 307. I am able to assign each machine to individual midi channels to create mute groups. The built in sounds ain't half bad either.

Out of it all I learned that with persistence you can pretty much learn things you never thought you had inside. Back when music use to be something new/exciting (15yrs+ ago) it always seemed like the beatmasters had unlocked pandoras box and knew the secrets of the universe. I always had a feeling that I would someday do it as well.

i'd like to add that the 'mark mystery' chopping technique does not seem to be accessible to SX users... since Wax discovered this I have been using it all the time, and it would be the dealbreaker if I were to decide between the two models today... otherwise I dunno anything cuz I have never used an SX.

I found those threads very helpful. I'm sad to here the chopping trick doesn't work on the SX, because besides that the SX seems to have many advantages. Extremely tough decision, especially because I've never used either.

i consider that a malfunction, so i want Roland to fix it.

The functioning of mark and reverse on the 303 is dope, it should have been like that on the SX. I wonder if there was a technical reason to change it, like the fact that the SX no longer compresses the audio data to it's own format.

Then again, yes there are a lot of advantages. But that doesn't make it right!

turntables. but sampling-wise sadly an sp303. sad because i didn't know how to use it and ended up selling it within couple months but had i known about this forum i woulda definitely kept it. then i had a slow ass computer i got from the thrift store but i was too stubborn to even give software a chance. then i landed on 505. wasn't feelin it as much. currently happily situated on the 404.

my first piece was technically a guitar. Then I abandoned the guitar, never looked back...it was one of the most unnatural things I got into music with, despite learning to play it very well.

second piece of gear was my Vestax PMC07 Pro Scratch mixer. Used it with my friends old gemini turntables...soon later got my Numark TT200s. Then I bought the SP-303! Later on I bought a Vestax PDX2300 turntable to replace the 200's and then a RANE TTM 54i mixer, for the hell of it. Soon after that I bought an MPC1000bk and a microkorg.

After I got my Vestax PDX2300 I threw away the first crappy TT200 and the second TT200 got left at a friends house (abandoned). Then I bought a Tech SL-1200 MK5...sold my vestax PDX.

I currently own a defective MPC1000bk, a Tech 1200 MK5, my SP-303, and my trusty Vestax PMC07 Pro.

No computer of my own, so I use my ipod as an external harddrive to store samples.

Copped an asr-10 in 95. Didn't hold onto it for too long,but I got an original eps a few years later.I really learned the most shit on a Sampletrak i picked up in 02.

It only works like that on a Windows computer. A mac doesn't see an ipod as an external drive.

And that's a damn good reason you shouldnt buy a mac. LOL

Ha! I never even thought that far ahead! I've got roughly 5000 samples saved on it as AAC files so they can be listened to & the ipod can be sampled directly from by cable.

It sucked converting all those MP3 & WAVs but it was worth the whole day of waiting!

gearwise it was a sl-1200, then a boss sp-505, which i think is one the best samplers a person can buy, only its too slow with processing.
my buddy uses an esx and he's been borrowing my 404, after two weeks he says to me 'i really like that sampler' there you go!
