hey, i got a sp808 and i used to have a 555. im having a hard time
girt-i-fying my drums now. there are like a million lo-fi effects but most just turn the drums into glitch sounds which i aint into. i want those warm pumping drums and i just aint gettin em. ive been layering, distorting, cutting and compressing. just havent figured it out yet.
help.

hmmm... I can tell you that: it ain't gonna happen on the sp.

if I understand you right on that "pumping" sound - you should read up on the internet about "sidechain compression".

I use it, I understand part of it, but not nearly enough to give you a walkthrough or tutorial on it. I just set it up in ableton (ableton 8 has a built in sidechain compressor) and tweak until I like what I hear.

fly lo sounds is massive sidechaining for example (tea leaf dancers, for example). if that is what you want...

cheers.

^ i actually understood from a discussion on stonesthrow mb that the vinyl comp on the 303 does more or less something like sidechaining/ducking, ie, dynamically adjusting the levels of one thing when the other kicks in (that's what it sounds like).

but i understood OP as talking about processing individual drum hits?

don't know the 808 though so ehm :)

Haha...

Well, never played with the SP-808 but algorithm 03 should be your best friend, other than that you might try using the Vinyl Sim turning all the noise/click stuff off (I guess it works like the one on the 555/404).

If you use extreme compression on a mixed signal that includes loud and quiet bits (ie a loud bassdrum playing at intervals over something else), you will get a pumping effect of sorts (lack of envelope controls for the compressor on SPs limits effectiveness), but there's no way to trigger the compression from one sample and apply it to another as in actual sidechaining.
