Re: Kill Quantize
i notice for resampling live it works better if you count in, because it glitches right off the bat

Re: Kill Quantize
I usually quantize the 1st step and with loops.
or I
Try using all the quantization functions.
In DAW's I think the quantization function is just another instrument. Mixing it up with different swings.

Yes, that's true for any software DAW or hardware sampler that features non-destructive quantization. Just experiment with it and you'll see how useful it really is.
Of course, whenever you can set a strength of the quantize, you'll be able to opt how much you want it to define the rhythm anyway.

Re: Kill Quantize
yea true, sometimes the SP is kinda hard to get that off time early swing sound, but its doable, Long Live The SP!!!!

Re: Kill Quantize
Yeah, one thing you can do is resample with a bit of air / no sound in front, then afterwards set the start point a little bit tighter, but keep some space in there.
That makes a sample a lot more natural / loose when it comes to timing. Even when you've already made a sequence, you can just swap samples from the pads you've used effectively meaning you can try out different 'tightnesses' of a sample.
Very useful if you're after that truly natural off time sounding stuff.

Re: Kill Quantize
^ Cosign. There's a difference between sloppy and swing. Check it- Try having your snares and hats each on three pads, with some empty space in front of them. Kicks on two. First get all your start points PRECISE- meaning the point that you hear the slightest fragment of the hit. Then quantize your snares on 16/3 , hats on 8 , kicks on 16. Then, leave one snare as is , one at -1 , and the other at -2. Next put your kicks at -2 and -3. Last, hats at -3 , -4, one at -5.Be sure to alternate all the pads throughout the pattern. When laying samples/chops,try quantizing the main parts on 16, espescially if your using some half bar or one bar segments...small chops can go un- quantized as well as anything you wanna layer over the sequence. This is just an example, obviously the settings can vary slightly-- but you get someILL swing like this. Anybody talking about quantizing is wack needs to study their hip hop , and beat making history in general. And i'm not saying NOT quantizing is wack , espescially without a swing function-- but it's ignorant and condescending to just dismiss it completely. Peace

Re: Kill Quantize
that style of swing is one i never got.......when i do this, i use it to place things where i need it, sometimes it can be used multiple times in a pattern, and sometimes its just to get one hit right where i need it, but i never did it like the way you explained, thats like how adru used to explain it, he used to post here, and i just adopted it my own way

Re: Kill Quantize
when I am working on my 404 I just record the sample chops to one pad in the order that i want them, placing a little space in front of the recording, then resample my high hats over the sample chops live (RESAMPLED). Then lay the snares and kicks over that. Most of the time it is on, but def not quantized. I keep some things like the original chops that i resampled on another pad (i make a copy) so if it goes south i can revert to the pad with just the chops, or just the chops and hats and start again. Just what I do, not to make it more live but I just dislike finding the tempo of crazy chops and working in the sequencer, it is a F#$%ing prison to my creativity. I also like this method because I can have a kind of master fx control over the tune and resample that. ha ha, the shake weight commercial for dudes just came on the tele, ha ha ha...

The stuff that i've done that i liked, so far, was done this way, but with the order screwed up, doing kicks and snares first, and the sample chops over them. So i ended up with snares that were too loud, bad timing and stuff like that. I'm gonna try doing it in the order you suggest, makes more sense entirely.
Re: Kill Quantize
When I'm making hiphop, I'll usually quantize the samples a lil bit, but leave the drums swingin, but if I'm making dubstep/electronic-y music, I'll quantize the drums and leave the synths glitchy and everywhere
