Akai APC40?

Post by Acities »

Does anyone here use one? Im thinking of buying one to incorporate into my live setup which right now consists of SP404sx, Macbook-Ableton Live, M-audio Oxygen 8 v.2 (25 key), let me know if anyone uses one or even a MPD, i think it would be more flexible than the oxygen 8 because it has more knobs and faders, anyways let me know!!!

I'll chime in and say my mpd24 is in it's box since i got a Novation Launchpad. And I kind of want to trade my LP for an APC. With the APC there is no easy way that I know of to control your midi tracks with the pads. LP has this built in with the press of a button. I would say DO IT!

I use the mpd32. the reason I didnt go with the apc is because its mainly for triggering scenes. I like the mpd32 for the fact that I like it alot for drumming on. The pads are stiff but if you like to beat on pads like a madman like I do it works great. Also there is a app that came out to use the mpd in "apc mode" I dont use it because you can assign different starting points to your loop, and then assign those different starting points to different pads(if that makes sense). Anyways the ableton live/midi controller is a very effective tool. I never forget about my sp404 though! Still use it in the setup on the daily 8)

Interesting, the apc is built specifically for triggering inside of ableton. The mpd takes more setting up but once you get the settings right its dope. I have never used the apc but from what I have heard its pretty much midi triggering for dummies  Like I said though it isnt good for recording but I think it would be dope for triggering scenes in ableton... which I remind you that there are "apc mode" apps for the mpd as well, and other ways to accomplish similar things. I'm still figuring it all out. I'd love for this topic to go far so we could figure out some cool shit 8)

yea man, im basically using my 25 key oxygen8 controller like your using your MPD, only reason i want to upgrade is so that i can gain more knobs and faders, pad arent that big of a deal, pads/keys do the same shit midi wise, MPD32 looks really sexy, too bad i cant find any on CL, but the APC40 is retailing for around almost $300cdn, oh ya and the APC has to be powerd with an adapter from what i understand, it doesnt work with straight usb power which sucks, so i may lean towards the MPD32, does anyone know if they are discontinued or if Akai is still producing them??

MPD is still being made

the whole mpd vs apc/LP just depends on whether you want to trigger clips/do monome type stuff, or bang pads with velocity sensitivity.. theyre targeted at different purposes

i've been looking into this alot recently. im thinking of coppin a padkontrol for drums and synths. touch pad and footswitch are important for what i want to do, knobs and faders not so. then cop an lp for simply triggering loops and samples. then i wanna run the the interface through the 404 for extra effects with a mic aswell.

also, the padkontrol would look rather nice next to the macbook hahaha.

i did use to have a mpd24 but gave it to my brother as i didn't get on with it and copped an mpc. but for live stuff, the mpc is stayin home. portability is my biggest must.

acities- you got any vids or audio of your live ish??

I use a padkontrol for everything I do in ableton, it's not as convenient as the apc for triggering but I can make drum beats and play sets with it.

I ordered a MPD26 the other day, waiting for it to arrive. I hope I didn't haste that decision too much cause I saw the Korg NanoPad/Kontrol/Key afterwards and begin to think that a combination of those would do the same job for me for less money. Plus I'd have a Midi keyboard then.
But I'll wait and see. At least I got it from overseas and could sell it here without losing any money if I'm really not satisfied. I have to admit that I didn't look up the shipping cost for that box (~50$ !) in the first place.

Now I gotta get me a version of Ableton Live and start getting into it to see if I like working with that or stick to Reason.

I'd recommend the Korg line, if I just add those faders for like 40 I'll be able to do so much more. I gotta say I've been very pleased with the padkontrol and probably haven't even gotten into too deep yet.
