Ne1 wanna try and make some pop music? :-P

Post by cartesia »

How hard could it be right?

I'm thinkin along the lines of all the electronic sorta stuff around at the moment, anywhere from kanye/kesha/etc to the more indie electro/synthpop type stuff, maybe halfway between..

I figure it seems really easy, and selling out could be a good way to fund our more underground endeavours.. and I dunno bout you guys but I wouldnt mind being in the minds of 16 year old girls wherever I go

I think I've been listenin to too much commercial radio since i got my car with only a radio receiver

Buy hey, I think this would be fun... I figure the best way to bring down society is to blag our way to the top then incite revolution!

Ax an example of how basic it has to be, listen to this:

I used to rave to happy hardcore in the early 00's and this track is all these pop tracks at the moment are so similar to it, except slower and less layers, so it seems prettty straight forward simple to me.

Cool.. !
So I think the first thing we gotta get is a main line / melody / hook that is really catchy..

Oh and if ppl wants to post up some youtube links to pop tracks and stuff that they think have a certain sound we could go for , thatd be cool.. just to get an idea of which stuff you guys like.

Here's another pop beat that got really stuck in my head for a while.. again, ridiculously simplistic.. can't stand the lyrics in the actual version but the beat is pretty catchy

This one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N17fnW_MhvQ

As you can see there's quite a generic pattern to all the stuff thats around at the moment.. very bright/happy basic lead, very plain sawtooth bass - not very deep at all (sometimes with sub bass underneath).. usually only 2-3 layers besides little bits that only play for acouple seconds.

more examples:

Seriously all this stuff seems so ridiculously stupid to me hahaha.. It's like they found a bunch of old happy hardcore records from like 2000-2004, slowed them down, then put their shitty rnb vocals and beats on top of it... It is so bizarre to me!

Then there is the dirtier stuff with looser / less plastic sound.. still very much pop, perhaps not quite so horrible though

Just remember to sound true to you (don't make it sound forced). Also make sure the vocals aren't generic but relatable. This sounds like common sense, but people get cought up in the moment and tend to forget the basic priciples of song writing.

basically! yes... there also used to be a rack hardware version..

When you hear kanye west 'sing' you can really notice it because it has to make such big corrections, but when someone with half ok voice uses it its not too noticeable i guess... although you can still tell if you listen hard.. its kinda like if voices had a glide/portamento switch and they put it on, thats how i can usually tell.

i gotta be honest, this isn't what i consider 'pop'. these tunes sound like diet RnB/electro. with the melodic simpleness of a dubstep riff (not necessarily a bad thing).
