no, you'd need a phrase sampler for that. which the 404 is not.
your best bet is to make several copies of your base sound, and resample them each at different pitches to your liking. then try to work from there.

CHITS: AFAIK the SP-404 is actually a phrase sampler.

teamsleepnine: as CHITS said you can resample at different pitches (or sample each note). It's alot easier to do stuff like this on a computer and then import the samples into the 404 though.

The MicroSampler is better for this kind of thing as well as old samplers and Casios...

^ yea you're right my bad. the 404 is a phrase sampler, meaning it does not resample each sound at different notes. it is best for playing back single, one-shot sounds.

Just a side note, a non-phrase sampler doesn't resample each note either, it just plays back the samples at different speeds to achieve pitch change.
For that, you need fast memory, faster than SD cards at least. That's why most samplers have RAM and you have to deal with varying storage methods :)

the sp-505 has the chromatic pitch functionality, but the 404 does not.

Time compression no, sounds like poop yes :)
I think what he meant is the 505's ability to automatically shift a sample to 16 notes and spread them on the pads. Still pitchshift though, still sounds like poop.

I have similar style and work flow to Kim Hiorthoy, We record note off instrument to pad and record pattern by playing pads(notes) like a paded piano of sorts, very fun and interesting for shows, hear my track My happy melancholy it is made that way :) good luck friend
