Sampling fresh for each beat or preparing a bunch of sounds

i'm enjoying this thread, and i'll try some of the techniques in here.

my fave way to work is to leave a sampler on all day, work on a beat for a bit, go do something else, come back and do a bit more, do something else....it makes me feel like i'm being productive all day without feeling like i've just spent the day turning the data wheel (or whatevs). and at the end of the day - a new beat!

i tend to do this ^^ with stuff i'm sampling as i go, rather than with a built up folder of samples.

yo fauna, i liked what you said about leaving the machine on all day and go and come back to the beat. i checked out some of your joints, that lithium batts joint is hot, that bass brings all that shit together in that one. sounds like you have a bunch of different sources that you layer all over the place. nice work. so you just lets say, lay down a melody, then when you find something else you work it in? cause im usually working with libraries which im trying ot move away from, im just always thinking id be looking forever to find something to put on top of something else, instead of having a few samples to resample and make work.

thanks for the props spring! it's not false modesty when i say there a ton o' cats on here w/ more skillz than i bring. but i appreciate the shout out. srsly.

i use libraries sometimes too, i'm not a snob - i'll steal from anyone. lol.

but mostly i just try to combine stuff from a bunch of dif sources - $1 vinyl, live playing (guitars, keys), library stuff, a lil bit of found sound. i have an aesthetic i stick to, usually just darker sounding stuff with all the glitches left in, which means i know i'll want a particular sound when i hear it. that makes it easier when diggin', regardless of where i'm diggin from.

some guys on here are pro'lly the same way with psych or soul or kung-fu movies (!). they just know the sound they want when they hear it.

Back to the topic: the more I think about it, the less I actually do stuff but maybe a little bit of both is fine.

right on fauna, i see what you mean about the particular sound. i been diggin alot of them old romance records that be coming in the multi album packs. i been sampling alot of open chords n shit. but before i would grab anything and everything i heard and liked then i end up with a cluster fuck of sound. so im trying to work my way to a more stable form of sampling... for me.
