changing the pitch/tuning samples?

Hello,
Im wondering if there is any way to tune or change the pitch of samples in the sp 404sx, and i dont mean by the pitch effect. i usually use a mpc2000xl which has 16 levels and tuning. if there is no way to do so internally can anyone suggest a method for me to tune some sample on my comp, ive got protools audacity and garage band installed at the moment thanks!

are u able to change the pitch of more than one sample at a time or youve gotta do them one by one?

you can't do it on the 404.

the easiest way I find to do it is to load it up in ableton live or FL Studio or garageband or whatever you have..

Then just play each note with a gap between them, and chop the recording into individual notes (or play it straight into the sp while u record audio input)

with the audacity method I'm pretty sure itll change the pitch of everything you've selected, so if you load each sample in as a track, then select all, then pitch up one semitone and export all tracks individually, it should save 1 note for each track.. just a guess though.

I feal the same way about computers. If you have a turntable pitch and sample them. Thats how I fine tuned my samples for my SP 1200.

Hate to say it, but if you want to tweak melodic samples, the 404 isn't really the tool for the job. I know it can be done but a little help from something else that makes a really good job of re-tuning would make it much easier.

What kind of thing are your samples - recorded yourself or off sample banks?

not to jack the thread, but what is the best way to pitch audio files the "real" way, i use cubase and i don't like the algormithm they use, not to mention they effects for pitch and time stretch are two seperate effects, i want to be able to do a turntable style pitch, i know there has been other threads about this, but has there ever been a decided free software that is pretty good for pitching things this way???

to tell you the truth i could fuck with moviemaker i bet, i used to have premiere pro til my comp crashed and with that it pitched naturally to an extent, it sounded alright and was based off of changing the speed of 100%, but i'm open to any other suggestions, i used to use max/msp but my 9 month student subscription is up

It isn't that easy to change pitch in digital - takes a fair bit of processing even from a basic slow down or speed up.
You could do all you want in Melodyne but it's an expensive option.
Most audio editors can do it - but you have to watch for the options - change pitch (preserves time), change time (preserves pitch) or change Pitch&Time (Preserves neither). The last matches what tape or vinyl speed change does.

If you want to simulate the sound of tape or vinyl slow down or speed up there's a free plug-in called (I think) Tapestop. It's not for a fixed speed change though, although with practice you might be able to hold it steady long enough for you to sample.

I think the simplest way if you want to quickly produce a sound at different musical pitches is an instrument sampler plug in.
Find out the musical note of your sample.
Load it onto that note in the sampler
Specify the key range the sample will play on
Play the new note you want and sample it.

A lot of DAWs have an instrument sampler bundled, but I've a suspicion that Cakewalks freeware SFZ+ could do it. If you have a Creative soundcard and installed it's Vienna soundfont editor, you can make a soundfont and product the new pitches that way.

If you prefer hardware - is this a job for that little korg sampling keyboard?

I'd just use an audio editor (like audacity which is free) or something like ableton live to do a basic pitch alteration.. sucks that cubase can't do it.. or maybe it can, i dunno how to use that tho

word word, i really only want something so i can pitch the breaks collection for when i gotta use it (still buildin that breaks collection, that shit takes time)......i don't mind the time stretch on the sp and i guess i'm gonna stick with that for now, but i'm definitely not lookin to use a single pitch effect or time stretch one that are seperate from each other, either i'll have to grab max/msp again, because that did it like a champ, or i'll have to wait til i snatch up serato at some point which probably won't be forever........anyone here know anything about pure data, the open source version of max/msp??
