Good reads

Thought I would share a some good reads for musicians and heads alike. "the tao of wu" by rza is some good ish, he tells alot of good stories in there and shares alot of knowledge and wisdom. "Start and Run your own Record Label" by Daylle Deanna Schwartz, its always good to know some new strategies and gain some knowledge about the biz and this provides it. "This is your brain on music" by Daniel J. Levitin, half way through this and its tight. It tells you alot about stuff like why you get certain melodies stuck in your head, why minor scales are more dark and major more happy. Its interesting stuff. Thought id share these, let me know what you reading on as well, peace

The Physics and Psychophysics of Music - Roederer
Listening - An Introduction to the Perception of Auditory Events- Handel
The Fundamentals of Hearing- Yost

I've read that book by Levitin - and maybe its because of my background - but I was disappointed in the lack of depth of his discussion.

I think the only reason I read books anymore is cuz my city has one of the best bookstores in the world (Powells Books). The place is absolutely insane! An entire city block and 4 stories of books

im currently reading a couple of good books (nothing musical) but i would defiantly recommend The Secret History of the World by Mark Booth.

it touches on all kinds of things from the creation of the universe, to secret societies, to astronomy, and astrology. Adam and Eve, the flower people and all kinds of stuff. This is just like the first four chapters. Its a really interesting read.

yes. i can recommend a couple.

Making Beats: the Art of Sample Based Hip Hop. I absolutely love this book and re-read it 2 or 3 times a year. Warning: it reads like a PhD thesis, cuz I think it was, but there are a million cool ideas, interviews, and just inspiration about the boom bap.

the 33 1/3 book on DJ Shadow's Entroducing. If you donno the 33 1/3 series, the idea is that every book is about one single album. I've read a bunch of these. the Entroducing one stands out tho, because it chronicles how Shadow just kept working to get better and learn more about hip hop, and the people that helped him along the way.

and, obviously, Behind the Beat - Hip Hop Home Studios. Just as the title describes, just a buncha shots of producers' studios. if you like looking at pics of people's gear and workspace, this book is worth checking out.

there are others i like (Shakey, the Neil Young biography; Miles, the miles davis biography; 33 1/3 book on the Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique) but these first three are my faves.

This book is amazing. It uses all of the tracks from Illmatic as a basis of comparison for music and society before and after the golden age of hip hop.
