Well it would help if you would elaborate a bit , instead of " what do i need "

Need for what ?

live shows ? djing ? small home studio ? cooking tacos ?

:D

Also what your goal is and what kind of budget your working with.

well, ask yourself what you need!

If you're not stuck saying 'man i need "x" right now and I cant go any further'

then you don't need anything at all

if you want a synth, what sorta sound you after?

if you're into the way vinyl sounds and going to be sampling things that aren't too easily recognizable then get yourself a numark p-01 or whatever that portable is called and some records

just remember

hall and oates = sampling no no

A small audio interface is really worth having in the studio. I dunno if they still make it, but the UA20 from Edirol is brilliant. I think it has been replaced by the UA-25? Anyway, with an interface and a copy of Audacity, you can capture any noodlings you create!

Audacity is free as the wind and a great recording program.

Acid Express is also free and very useful to have.

Check out demos of Project5, Sonar, FL studio and Cubase as well. They all cost dosh (heaps) but could be worth having if you like them.

Image Line FL Studio 7 Fruityloops edition is only 85€ here, so it'll be under 100 bucks. There isn't going to be much software that's better ánd cheaper me thinks..... still FL Studio isn't exactly the holy grail either...
