some good ideas in here, and hopefully some things to give you some new directions.

one thing i do is that i DO just make an 8 bar loop, but i try to make the second 4 bars different, as if they were part of a different loop entirely.

another idea (depends on what machine yr using, etc) is to write something in 5/4. that opens me up sometimes.

you live in ann arbor?
I'm in Toledo

I would advise that you use tv resample to make entire tracks.
like record four notes of a hihat and loop it and run it through some delay and freak the controls while you resample the hihat loop for like 32 bars. then lay a kick and snare over that and resample with some compression...

and so on.

Yes, the MV8800. Best sequencer I've come across in hardware so far! It's expensive, but it's worth every dime I've paid for it. I'll admit I am a fan boy, but it's so amazingly intuitive and convenient, with nearly no limitation on one's creativity. It's truly a blast to work with and I'm saying this not even being affiliated with Roland. 8)

When it comes to work-flow and methods of production, you can do anything you like basically. Build from patterns, build in song mode using the 'loop 8 bars' technique or any combination of both.
