seriously, though, there are a ton of dudes much better than madlib and doom at beatmaking. gotta say that doom has some darn good lyrics, though.
madlib and dilla and all those dudes definitely have some really large crates with ultra rare private pressings and shit, but they don't do much to a sample other than loop it...

since when is it all about choppin and stuff thought?? these are the dudes that helped created the the ways of beat making that we all know today, they were the progression, and there is more to beat makin than just choppin shit up and rearrangin it, and just cause blogs and youtube blow up sample sources, people start to realize that sometimes these dudes just don't chop, but madlib is like a music teacher man, he's a big reason why alot of us really do what we do and like what we like, he made me realize that i can learn the same shit off of other hip hop as i did off of him, he's like a musical curator you know, just cause everybody seems to ride his dick doesn't mean you can't appreciate the music he makes, he's schoolin us on the music of the past so that we can know and build on it

when it comes to making beats I could think of at least 50 people other than Madlib whom I would want to take lessons from, or consider a teacher.
I sample from vinyl too, and mp3's t.v. ect...I dont need a teacher for that. People make too big of a deal about diggin' like it makes them intelligent or mystical or whatever the fuck. It's very simple, youre sampling from an ext audio source and then composing on your sampler. Dont make it out to be anymore complex than that cus it's not. Ive been making beats this way for 13 years. Before it became a fad.

whatever, its just an opinion, for me he was a big part of my growth in knowledge and awareness of sample based music, i'm not sayin that there aren't artists that do way crazier shit and that i even think he is the best beat maker, there are so many ways to go about building songs from samples, i'm just sayin that he does it in a way that, i feel, really puts people onto learning all about the culture involved in beat making and helped to make me aware of a lot of shit, i can learn from any sample based artists work, but i'm sayin i became much more aware of how to even approach sample based music and diggin and choppin and layering and sequencing and all that shit, and madlib was a big part of that, maybe it doesn't seem that way to some of you, thats cool, i guess we came into this world through some different means

I do appreciate his music, but if all he's doing is just adding drums to a loop, I can't respect him that much as a musician. I'm not saying that all Madlib and Dilla tracks are based on loops, but most of them certainly are.
Some of the sample artists might appreciate that he's using their sample, but he's still making money off of other people's [partial] work.
Primo on the other hand can find dope samples and also chop them up to make it sound really dope. I find him more creative than Madlib, yes...at least when it comes to sample-based hip-hop.
Just my 2 cents.

I don't get some of you guys. Hip Hop started with just a mic and two turntables. DJ would spin a pair of records and loop a drum break or a bridge while the emcee would rap over that.

Basically if it got your head nodding then thats all that counts.

I appreciate DOOM and Mad because they're crate diggers like me. Even though they're older cats, they're coming from the roots of Hip Hop. And as young cats we should keep those roots alive. If you think you can flip shit better than them, then God bless you because Hip Hop is suppose to evolve but keep it within its roots.

Yeah, and shortly after it had already evolved a lot - think Eazy-E and the likes. Hiphop has always been more than the stereotypical sloppy drumbeat over a random sample, even though some people don't seem to get it. "Keep the roots" yeah right, keep it primitive if you want. Other people happily evolve.
