so im thinking bout searching for a cheap tascam tape recorder and was wondering how one would go about transferring the recording to a computer? would you just be using the cassette as an interface kind of dealio?

I just use the plug the recorder output to the mic input of the computer, and then play the tape. You have to use a program like audacity just to record into though. It's not the worst way, but I wouldn't mind hearing a better way of doing it.

without a good audio interface i would think that recording back into your sp and exporting to wav would be the best quality you can get, just make sure your levels are proper when recording into the tascam, runnin it in the red for sure, then back into the sp so that the peak light is flickerin every now and then, and then export that, pop in the card on your comp and drag the file onto your desktop

Don't worry about losing a bit of quality when recording again in the sampler. After all you're planning to record first to a cheap tape recorder, that'll make you lose WAY more quality than any reasonable sampler could make you. Infact I couldn't imagine why anyone would want to use a tape recorder in the 3rd millenium other than using it as an effect, to get a specific sound.

I like that you're going to use a cassette recorder, too!
Recording to tape gets surprisingly good quality ;)
Do you need any suggestions on which recorder you want, or do you have some in mind already?

recording back into the sampler will cause the sound to change a bit, depending on which sampler you have. some compress the sound quality, and some don't. i usually use the eq fx while recording in, then do final mastering on the pc. remember, the tape you use and the tape player you use all have an impact on the sound as well.

Well, I use the Tascam Portastudio 414 MKII. I haven't used any other recorders, but look into those portastudios from tascam. Check your craigslist or ebay to find some good deals locally.

if your only recording your stereo mix from your sp and nothing else, you can find really cheap tape units at thrift stores too
like this is at a goodwill near me for $15

if you going to be doing layering or vox go with a tascam, good quality (ive had tape and digital recorders from them)
